1969年Skye Recordsからリリースされるも、'70年の同レーベルの倒産と重なったためほとんど流通しなかった傑作。'68年11月本作品が録音された当時姉のWendy(Blondeの方)は17歳、妹のBonnieは13歳(!)だった。'67年WendyがVo、BonnieがDr.をしていたバンドのシングル(内一曲がボーナストラックとして収録)を聴いた関係者が本人に連絡を取り、シングル2枚の契約をしたがあまりに曲が良すぎるので結局はアルバムとなったという。Larry CarltonやJim Keltnerなどによる巧みで無駄がない印象的なバッキングに憂いのあるコーラスが乗る最高の展開で日本人の琴線に触れる要素が多い（実際欧米よりも先に日本で発掘・評価された）。なお一部で噂されたWendyがPrince familyの一員だった、というのは出鱈目。これまたSundazedからの再発で音質もリマスターされて完璧、貴重なdemo音源も絶句するほど良い。

これぞソフトロック最大の奇跡というべき大名盤なんですが、演奏の素晴らしさは、バックミュージシャンの豪華さによるものだとして、何とわずか十代半ばの男女がこの複雑な楽曲を全て生み出したということの脅威。本当かよと疑ってしまいそうなほど、あまりにも練られている楽曲は、確かに少女２人の線は細いが、完璧なハーモニーで歌われている。M3などは、後にマイク･オールウェイのレーベルifのコンピで、カバーされていたが、そのコンピの中でもメロディの良さが際立っていたのを覚えている。そんな事実を突きつけられればられるほど、本当にこの可愛い少女二人が作曲したのだろうかという疑問が拭いきれないものがあった。

そして、ある一つの噂を知った。なんとこの二人うちウェンディは、あのプリンス･ファミリーのウェンディ＆リサのウェンディだというではないか。うーん、そうかそれなら全て合点がいく。確かにこの名盤「Genesis」は彼女らのペンにより書かれたものだ。しかし、本当だろうか？　結局分からない。

サンフランシスコ出身の当時17歳と13歳の姉妹69年発表のアルバム、って、え？弟じゃなかったの？どう見てもジャケからエクソシストを連想してしまうのって変ですか？
1曲目はオルガンぶいぶい、ブラジリアンサンバばりの、ノリノリのグルービーチューン。これを聴くと、ついつい僕も怪しい体の動きになってしまいます。その後ハーモニー重視のソフトロックよりの音楽を聞かせてくれます（一番それよりな"You Keep Hanging Up On My Mind"が一番好き）。でも、アルバムを通して聴いてのの印象と言う点では、もっとオーソドックスな60年代ロック的な感じがします。混沌の時代を表しているというか。70年代A&Mのような洗練された感じではないです。
本当にこの姉妹が書いたのか分りませんが、ソフトロック系にありがちな有名ライター、有名曲のソフトロックアレンジという曲はなくて、全てクレジットは姉妹のオリジナルとなっています。
ソフトロックという単語から連想する、至福の時間と言うのが当てはまらない、もっと危険というか倒錯というか、危うい空気が漂ってくる、そんな時代に咲いた花、1種の珍盤とでも言ってしまいたい。20歳のラリー・カールトンも参加していますって、やっぱりなんか変でしょう？

多くのソフトロックを聴いてきましたが、その中でも最後まで残っているアルバムです。
完璧なバックミュージシャンを背景とし、浮遊感漂うオルガンとスレスレなコーラス。
幻想的なサイケ・ソフトロックに仕上がっております。

I reviewed an album called Livin' Love by The Feminine Complex, a collection of excellent pop/rock by four little teenage girls from 1969. It is easy to think this is interchangable with Wendy and Bonnie--if you know one you probably know the other--but this would be a mistake.

Wendy and Bonnie is, better in a number ways. Their dad, was a jazz musician, and managed to get his girls onto Gary McFarlands label, Skye, in 1969. This is signiffigent, because where the Feminine Complex plays out and out rock, Wendy and Bonnie shade their rock and pop with jazzy dynamics, creamy, cocktail playing, and nuances such as wha wha guitars. The vocals fit into the smokey dynamics of this music perfectly, and combigned, the singing and excellent back up band create a real warmth. You can picture yourself in a dark room full of 60s panneling and a fireplace, making out with your mini-skirted girlfriend, sipping a brandy and listening to this.

This record is wonderful. Nothing about the title, the name of the band or the picture of them on the front cover is remotely enticing - but, make no mistake, the music is fantastic.

Does anyone around now make such intensely beautiful, ice-chilled songs such as these? Check "The paisley window pane" or "Children Laughing" just for starters. There are absolutely no fillers, only the demos at the end are a bit naff but you can easily dispense with those. Don't let the price tag put you off just buy it.

Thank you Mark Radcliffe of BBC Radio 2 for introducing me to Wendy & Bonnie, and thank you for making my wallet 27quid lighter ! what a fantastic album, I cant believe I've never heard of them before. If you like those mellow 'hippie' tunes this album is perfect. bit expensive but worth it.
