俺は長年、ラムゼイ・ルイス の Funky Serenity を  Collectables盤CD  で愛聴してきたが、
今回、再発された R2 Records 盤の段違いに素晴らしい解析度の音質にビックリした。

各種楽器の分離が Collectables盤CD よりも明確で、非常に生々しくクリアな音で再現されている。

音圧も上昇しているが、これは突出し過ぎの感もあるので、好き嫌いが分れるかも知れない。

ま、それはともかく、この作品は国内未CD化で、知名度・人気度では  太陽の女神 : Sun Goddess  に全く及ばないが、
「キーボード奏者」としてのラムゼイ・ルイスを堪能するなら、当然コチラの方がいいに決まっている。

ウーリー、ローズ、電気ハープシコード、生ピアノを自在に駆使すると言っても、フュージョンは一切感じさせない。
あくまで、「ソウル」で「ファンク」なジャズを真摯に演奏している。

そして、スライムのような粘着ベースのクリーヴランド・イートンの存在感がこの作品に"箔"を与える結果となった。

トリッキーでアバンギャルドな#7に度肝を抜かれるが、
ロマンティックな生ピアノが爽快な#8#9は、ラムゼイ・ルイスのジャズサイドへの置き土産となった。

dieser CD, die eine unglaublich magische Stimmung verbreitet, sehr abwechslungsreich ist. Alle Musiker sind in Top-Form, die Klangqualität - transparent und gleichzeit saftig - ist hervorragend!
Ramsey Lewis spielt VIRTUOS seineTasten-Instrumente von Fender-Rhodes bis zum großen Flügel, Cleveland Eaton und Morris Jennings sind mehr als nur Begleiter am fetten E-Bass, Drums, Percussion und Congas. Ed Green kommt mit der Violine beim Moody Blues-Hit 'Night in White Satin' hinzu. Unglaublich geschmackvoll, dynamisch und lebendig!
Dieses Album hat den Zahn der Zeit schadlos überstanden.

Interesting how sometimes digital media can actually bring the best out of an analog recording. At least that's happened for me hearing this on CD for the first time. Well the Cadet era is long over. And by this 1972 recording (it was realesed a year later) Ramsey Lewis was under the full mentorship of Clive Davis who was actually letting him be more or less himself. Which in itself could be very interesting. Ramsey's musical profile is sometimes a bit dictated by astrology. He has a twin creative nature,capable of either making the most from his distinctive piano playing and sound or being so caucious his sound comes on as borderline elevator music. This album was his first to acknowledge the funk era-predating his breakout funk era release  Sun Goddess  by a little over a year or so. After all,it would be hard for a jazz artist interested in being contemporary in any way during this era not to be in some way influenced by funk and it's rhythmic possibilities. However those expecting such a heavily produced,richly orchestrated and pop oriented recording might want to think twice before checking out this one.

Produced by Teo Macero,who most famously produced Miles Davis this album does in fact reach towards musical territory explored by Miles during this era. With bassist Cleveland Eaton in addition to drummer Morris Jennings and electric violinist Ed Green this album represented some very different musical directions for Ramsey. Gone were concise soul-jazz standards full of heavy rhythm and the blues. And in are tunes such as "Kufanya Mapenzi",drapped in this captivating wall of percussion and some very atonal clavinet solos from Ramsey himself. "What It Is!" is the only tune here at all representive of the Ramsey Lewis Trio era sound but still instrumentally updated. Interpretations of "Betcha By Golly Wow","Where Is The Love" and "If Loving You Is Wrong,I Don't Want To Be Right" doesn't represent a change for Ramsey either. It's how he made his name basically. What changes on these primarily is the percussion is again at a higher premium,something heard during the Maurice White era on Cadet but taken to another whole level here.

"Serene Funk" finds Ramsey and the players discovering the deep blues roots in their funk and on the 9+ minute "Dreams" they let the Miles influence just fire away on one of the most atonal and musically abstract tunes Ramsey Lewis has every been associated with-sometimes veering into Ornette Coleman/Art Ensamble Of Chicago style territory in terms of abstractions in soloing. "Nights In White Satin" with Ed Greens violin front and center takes that sense of abstraction into another interpretation where Green's composition "My Love For You" shows how a basic combination of percussion over Ramsey's heavily echoed rhodes creates a soulfully melodic magic. Overall this album presents some of Ramsey's finest music of the funk era. It's nothing at all like the music he'd make during his involvement with Charles Stepney/Larry Dunn/EWF during the mid to late 70's. It's a different sort of sound . A different kind of Ramsey Lewis funk. And while it does kind of follow a similar patter as EWF,as they went more or less from more abstract jazz based funk at the beginning of their career to more of a pop sound later on,this albums showcases how much of a journey Ramsey's music had really taken.

I decided to make a playlist of all the music I listened to when I was younger. This album was in my stepdad's Columbia House collection and I had to order it when I remembered. I recognized every song and it was refreshing just to listen again.

I bought this album in '73 (21 years old) and loved it rightaway. It sounded great at the time, so well produced. I had never heard an accoustic bass so clearly on a record. Great playing by Cleveland Eaton and the others.
