Cold Blood with Lydia Pense, a San Francisco-based rock/R&B band performed in the style of Chicago and Blood, Sweat And Tears. Music impresario Bill Graham was so impressed by the group when they played his Fillmore West in 1969, that he signed them to his record label. This CD contains their two full-length albums, "Cold Blood" and "Sisyphus."

Voila une compil' qui va vous coller au mur. Elle rassemble les deux premiers albums d'un fameux groupe de la BAY AREA à la fin des années '60 (but still going strong). COLD BLOOD emmené par la superbe chanteuse LYDIA PENSE (quelle femme, équivalente à JANIS JOPLIN qui les a recommandée à BILL GRAHAM). Ces deux albums ont produits par B.G. pour son éphémère label "san francisco" en 1970 et 71. Les reprises sont transfigurées (hayes et porter, bobby parker et willie dixon notamment) et les originaux (rahh !! if you will, funky on my back), le groupe vous arrache carrément à votre siège. Ecoutez le travail des zicos, ça c'est de la zizique vingt dieux !! On trouve des videos de CB sur un site bien connu de tous, allez-y et vous allez voir...

I first heard of the group Cold Blood on a compilation cd box set called  What It Is! Funky Soul And Rare Grooves (1967-1977)  on a song called "When I'm Kissing My Love." That song blew me away and I just had to find out more about this group.

That exploration led me to this cd COLD BLOOD/SISYPHUS and I'm not disappointed.

"Cold Blood" released in 1969 and Sisyphus in 1971, blended the elements of rock, soul, and gospel into a fiery sound that sounds as good today--as I'm sure it did back then.

The San Franscico Bay area group was fronted by singing dynamo Lydia Pense, who sounds a lot like Janis Joplin, and the icy hot blend of vocals and music makes me want to testify(scream and shout).

If you like 60s-early 70s type rock music, think hippie/counter culture generation, you'll love COLD BLOOD/SISYPHUS. It's that good.

Forget Janis Joplin with her irritating gin soaked voice, there is and always will be one great SF singer and that is Lydia Pense, not only is she beautiful but she has the most amazing soul voice as good as any i've heard (and i'm including Aretha) and her band are brilliant, slick, high energy funksters. None of this physchedelic drivel, they may have been around at the same time and blew many a name band off the Fillmore stage, but these offerings not only stand the test of time but are as timeless now as then. Highlights well 'i'm a good woman''i just want to make love to you' (Lydia at her most passionate) are without doubt the albums tour-de-force, but not a track is wasted. But it is Pense's voice that holds the interest and now she's back with a new Cold Blood and guess what? -they're as great as ever. The only comparasion i can make is Jen from Deep Banana Blackout- another sadly unreconized funk vocalist. Two great albums on one? Buy it!

What would you get if you placed one "Beautiful Blonde Babe" (Ms. Lydia Pense), who if you closed your eyes for a second and just listened, you could swear under oath in court that she was born into a African American family.
Then, if you were to add a "Monsterous" horn section blowing powerful horn riffs like their very lives depended on it.
If you then still had the the presence of mind to throw into this wild musical mix, one "Dynamite" rhythm section, which had as its "Funky Drummer" a young kid (Sandy McKee) with some of the slickest hand, and feet licks this side of the Golden Gate/San Francisco/Oakland Bridges.
What would you have, and what would you call it?,...Cold Blood. That's what you would call it,...Cold Blood.
Cold Blood, maybe the second funkiest band (Tower of Power being the first) ever to come out of the S.F. Bay Area in the late sixties, early seventies. This album deserves a replay.
