Global A Go-Go, Joe Strummer's second album with The Mescaleros following 1999's Rock Art and The X-Ray Style mines the same concerns that have always inspired his music. "Johnny Appleseed" and "Cool 'n' Out" centre on Joe's brash eruptive guitar but hark back to his pre-punk folk busking roots, with lyrics anchored by a strong sense of indignation and social commitment. Strummer may pride himself as an original punk warlord, but he realises punk can only thrive by rejoicing in Britain's ever-vibrant multicultural melting pot as he does on "Bhindi Bagee" and the Arabic inflected refugee requiem "Shaktar Donetsk". His longstanding fascination with dub reggae fuels "At the Border, Guy", while the Marconi saluting title track celebrates the power of radio to present new worlds and unite communities. On "Mondo Bongo" he dispenses with his trademark bark for a lovely ballad laced with pre-Clash accomplice Tymon Dogg's lonesome violin. This is real anger with a big warm heart; maturity suits Strummer just fine. --Gavin Martin

彼のソロ作の中では割と取っ付きやすい感じで
ポップに仕上がっています。

クラッシュファンの方々にはお勧めの必聴盤です。

It has taken a long time and several listenings before writing a review of Joe Strummer's 'Global A Go-Go' because I just couldn't get a handle on the music. It's so different than anything else. At times it's rocking (Cool 'n' Out), at times happy (Bhindi Bhagee) and at times psychedelic (Gamma Ray, Shaktar Donetsk). And, oh yea, there's a 17-minute instrumental that sounds like something from a Ken Burns Civil War documentary. The album is a 73-minute ride around the world with all sorts of (mostly acoustic) instruments, and I can finally say, "I like it." Of the 11 songs, I am downloading six to my iTunes library. The other five are good; the six are great.

１９９９年のフジロックにジョーが出演してその秋「ｘレイスタイル」が発売され翌年１月ジョー＆メスカレロス単独公演、この時の熱気がこのアルバムが出た２００１年夏頃を境に自分の周り連中のストラマー熱がサーッと引いていった。何故か？不思議でしょうがない。本作こそメスカレロスと組んで達した一つの境地なのに。ブラブラと放浪しながらリンゴの種を植えて歩く男「1ジョニーアップルシード」出来すぎた話だがジョーは後世に種を蒔くという行為をしておきたかったのでは？。マイナーコード充満の「シャクタードネツク」０２年の朝霧、新宿公演ではこれが一曲目に用いられている。ロジャーダルトリーのチョイ役がいい味出してる「グローバルアゴーゴー」。爽快感タップリの「メガボトルライド」。そしてNY９・１１の鎮魂歌にも良く流されたという映画「ブラックホークダウン」のエンディングテーマ「ミンストレイルボーイ」。よく味わって聞くと粒揃いの佳曲タップリの名盤です。アルバムを出すタイミングもあったでしょうがこのアルバムの為にジョーは二度来日している、と云っても過言ではありません。最後にジョーが伝えたかったものが実はこのアルバムにタップリ入っているのかもしれません。

・・・・・ま、良質な音楽ってとこだ。無中にはなれない。

でも、これは僕の感受性がなくなったせいも大きいと思う。

アンテナが敏感だと余計なノイズまで拾う。で、そのままだと仕事がしにくいから、ニブくなるしかない。人はそれを成熟と呼ばないといけないのだろうか。。。。。←べつにええやん。

むかしは、レコードをレンタルしたらテープにダビングし曲名をすべて書きとめ、なんなら歌詞カードも熟読していたのに、今回この作品をレンタルし、ダビングどころか通して聴くことすらできなかったことにショックを感じている。

Sabrosa fusión de ritmos latinos, reggae, gaitas irlandesas, bolero... y el rock ya por de más conocidisimo de este ex the clash... Este álbum me encanta lo tenía en CD y encontarmelo acá en formato Lp fue en verdadero gozo! Viene con insert, letras de las canciones y fotos de la agrupación.

Das Album war 2001 ein ständiger Begleiter auf meinem MD-Player.

Besonders angetan hatten es mir die Songs "Johnny Applesead"; "Mega Bottle Ride" und "Bummed out City".
Auch die andern Songs fand ich toll: Joes spröde Stimme mit den krummen Ohrwürmern, das facettenreiche Arrangement, der Groove und eine überborderne Spielfreude.

Habe mir das Album im April 2019 nochmal auf Vinyl gekauft und muss sagen, dass es noch immer frisch wie am ersten Tag klingt.
Definitiv eins der besten Alben mit Strummer-Beteiligung und auf meiner Liste auch (mittlerweile) vor dem wirklich großartigen "Streetcore" von 2003.

If you liked Combat Rock's interesting songs, ones that melodically duck and dive over a range of obscure subjects in a range musical styles then you will love this album. I am surprised at those who have pronounced that this is not something Clash fans would like? If you only like the cut and thrust of the first album then this might be true for you, but if the likes of Sandinista and Combat Rock are your thing then I would say you will be taken aback by the sheer brilliance of this release. Prepare to be blown away....

Ce commentaire porte sur la réédition de 2012, en version européenne, chez Hellcat Records, sous forme de deux galettes vinyliques et d'un CD, du deuxième album de Joe Strummer (1952-2002) avec les Mescaleros, le dernier des albums du groupe parus du vivant de l'ex frontman du Clash.

A l'attention de ceux qui connaissent déjà ce disque, je précise que cette réédition est soignée : gatefold sleeve solide, disques vinyliques épais, pochettes intérieures avec toutes les paroles, les crédits et un magnifique texte du cinéaste étatsunien Jim Jarmusch. Le CD comprend en "bonus" une version en direct et en public de 'Bhindi Bhagee' avec un son très correct, qui laisse à penser qu'un jour peut-être un album live de JS&TM nous sera proposé...

A l'inverse de ceux qui ont revendu leurs albums en vinyle d'Alan Parsons Project ou du Barclay James Harvest en 1983 pour les racheter illico en CD, j'ai acheté les rééditions remastérisées de chez Hellcat Records à relativement bon prix, pour leur double format vinyle et CD, et aussi pour les titres supplémentaires. Je me suis débarrassé des CD originaux (je suis dans l'incapacité technique d'indiquer si le son est meilleur ou pas dans cette réédition).

Pour 'Global A Go-Go', comme le titre le laisse supposer, Joe poursuit dans la voie de l'album précédent, ' Rock Art & the X-Ray Style ', en accentuant tant dans ses télescopages lexicaux néo "beat poet" que dans la musique, la dimension "musique mondiale". Comme le fait remarquer Jim Jarmusch, le groupe des Mescaleros dans lequel figure le vieux copain multi-instrumentiste Tymon Dogg, tourne comme une horloge, totalement apte qu'il est à donner vie à la vision de son chef.

'Johnny Appleseed', c'est du rockabilly folk. 'Cool 'N' Out' commence de manière "space" mais un gros riff de guitare suivi d'un rock'n'roll syncopé ramène le tout sur Terre. 'Global A Go-Go' est reggae-rock pour les couplets mais plus rock vénère et se conclut avec des chœurs façon "Armée Rouge" (ou presque...). 'Bhindi Bhagee' se présente sous forme de funky world music, avec dans le rythme et la mélodie générale un côté "trippy" rappelant ' Loaded '.

Le downtempo 'Gamma Ray' est un mélange de reggae (la basse), de musiques latino (percussions) et arabe (violon, flûte) à la sauce "dub" (orgue etc.). 'Mega Bottle Ride' est la plage la plus courte (3:33) et elle propose une forme d'adaptation du blues rural, avec guitare sèche en avant mais aussi un rythme chaloupé et un refrain choral. 'Shaktar Donetsk' est une ballade que les Inrocks qualifieraient de "foutraque", chaloupée, jazzée, nostal-triste et balkanique.

La ballade 'Mondo Bongo', avec sa guitare espagnole, est-elle un "Ciao" à Manu, le "King Of The Bongo" ? 'Bummed Out City' est une ballade plus rock dans le ton, mais la guitare qui la conduit reste acoustique. 'At The Border, Guy' est de nouveau une proposition reggae dubbisante.

'Minstrel Boy' est une longue (17:51) dérive instrumentale adaptée d'un air traditionnel, posant une mélodie tournante de type celtique jouée au violon et à la guitare, avec l'accompagnement d'un tapis de percussions.

Pour toute une génération, écouter Joe fait un effet comparable à celui de telle madeleine pour un dénommé Proust. Souhaitons que Joe ait rejoint un monde encore "meilleur" que celui qu'il préfigurait avec ses derniers disques.
