It is reported that Birgit Nilsson once said that Isolde made her famous, but, Turandot made her rich. The two roles are vastly different. Isolde is probably the longest in the repertoire while Turandot is one of the shortest. Indeed, Isolde is never off of the stage for three full acts. The role of Tristan is equally demanding for tenors and in one noted Metropolitan Opera production Nilsson had a different tenor for each act; Karl Liebl, Ramon Vinay and Alberto da Costa. In Turandot, the title character does not even sing in the first act, but, simply appears. However, Turandot has been described as a voice killer because of the continuing high tessitura demanded when she is on stage. In the second act when she does appear, in most standard stagings, she is high on a stairway well up stage and must project "In questa reggia" to the deepest seats in the house. Nilsson later remarked because of the weight of the Turandot costume in a La Scala production that "she felt more like a draft horse than a diva". This disc contains no Puccini, but, does contain a Verdian selection from Nabucco, which Nilsson never performed on stage as Abagaille, another treacherous role that many sopranos have refused to do. Although Maria Callas did perform some arias from the role she refused to do the entire opera and even advised some of her favorite colleagues not to do so. Nilsson was once asked to learn Norma for a production, but, declined saying "it had too many little notes". Another selection on this disc is from La Forza del destino, also a role that Nilsson never performed on stage in the complete opera. However, Nilsson's performances at Bayreuth for sixteen seasons were legendary. Those roles are well represented on this disc. And Nilsson's operatic debut, with three days notice on October 9, 1946 in Stockholm as Agathe in Der Freischutz is represented by "Leise, leise". Her actual scheduled debut was one year and a day later, October 10, 1947, in the same house as Lady Macbeth. This is a magnificent collection.

We have been blessed to have heard Nilsson sing, whether live or on recordings. Her mark on the operatic world was that her voice was larger than any orchestra accompanying her and her consistency throughout her career.

When I met her 25 years ago in San Francisco, I told her that I enjoyed this recording of Verdi so much, I probably wore out the LP. At last I can remove my LP player from my stereo and retire it forever since I only used it exclusively for this recording.

What makes this recording so special to me are the glorious pear shaped notes she creates throughout this recital. The most remarkable one on this disc is "Pace, pace mio Dio." This one aria is worth the cost of the disc. Has anyone ever heard a more beautiful opening? What a joy it is to finally have this recording on CD.

Please be sure to grab a copy of this gem before it vanishes forever.

Really enjoyed this CD. Definitely worth listening to this great talent. If you are looking for an example of a dramatic soprano, you can't beat Birgit Nilsson.
