I don't usually write music reviews, since I find it hard to put the subjective into a review. Anyway, I've only heard this band mentioned briefly, oftentimes in the same breath of artists such as Black Moth Super Rainbow, Boards of Canada, or Aphex Twin. I finally decided to get their debut after hearing 'Slow Bicycle', which I really enjoyed. The whole album has a very lulled back presentation, but like Brian Eno's ambient music which has the same properties, the music is anything but dull. The music is (at times) comprised of beats reminiscent of RDJ era Aphex Twin, with some acoustic instruments thrown in. It's honestly hard to tell what's actually electronic or not at times. Honestly, you can't paint this whole album with one brush. It's quite varied - no song sounds the same as the other. Songs progress over time and change - almost like electronic based post rock.
Anyway, if you like the sound of that, or you've somehow stumbled across this album, get it. I find it hard to believe that it isn't held in higher regard among the Internet's music scene. It's a really special album, with a lot of charm, and you can tell the artists put a lot of care into each song on the album, and in the end, the music is just really damn good!
If you like anything that's been labeled IDM, anything that's been labeled 'post-rock', or are just skimming this page, buy this album. It's really, really, really good, and doesn't sound like quite anything else out there.

Múm's work of art deftly blends the frontier between "digital music" with its "avant garde" twists and the more stable, grounded, texturized "instrumental folk".
A smart array of means is used - naïve/eerie vocals, crash cymbals melt with accordion, whistles, piano, folk guitar, percussions, grinding, flutes, xylophones, chimes and bells - and blended with warped sounds, scratches, aged computer like digital notes ("Smell memory", "Awake/train") or even electronic harpsichord texture ("Random summer"). In "I'm 9 today" soft typewriter touches mingle with gentle xylophones.
Like their previous albums, some of their more typical aural references appear: fairy like melodies and dreamy tingling, giving us that "home orchestra" feel of talented buddies letting their inner children paint in bright and soft colors. However, beneath the apparent casual randomness of the pieces, little by little you will sense there has been great thought put behind these co-mingling of styles, like a great patchwork, revealing itself to you only once you have "relaxed" into it.
Rythms can get complex: counter-point ("Asleep/train" & "Awake/train", prime examples of their musical resourcefulness), delays ("Ballad/records"), triolets, reversals, switches of keys ("Sunday/rolling"), all layered with different tones, instruments to appear, once again, very laid back and of easy access.
All has a soft melancholic touch (the exquisitely intriguing "Slow bicycle"), and an experimental vibe (hear the drum & bass rhythm in "Sunday/rolling"), never heard of, definitely unique. The pleasure to be able to move into this unusual space which bears the typical Mum ambiance but keeps you still bewildered should incite you to get this piece of art.

It's rare that a musician creates a masterpiece that manages to weave originality, beauty and emotion into such a fine tapestry. But that's exatly what Mum has done with this, easily their best album to date.
It's the atmospherics that make this album. Lyrics only comprise a small (but stirring) portion of one song, but they really aren't missed. The atmospherics are so masterfully done that they wrap you within a spell: the almost giddy motif immediately calls to mind the fuzzy, positive memories of childhood: listening to it for the first time is like experiencing the joys of childhood again, with the excitement of a child.
Light-hearted, beautiful, seamless, this album is a must-have; trust me. And here's a little hint: if you buy it directly from amazon.co.uk and have it shipped, you can save yourself money and time. (Or at least that was the case before the dollar collapsed.)
