Wonderful version of Beethoven

In all the hoopla that surrounds the original instrument versions of Beethoven music, in all the quest for speed, clarity and power, it is frequently a problem with Beethoven that the interpreters lose sight of the musicality and soul of the composer. Norrington, Gardiner, and others have gone for speed and clarity, but where is the musical poise?
It isn't that I don't like fast Beethoven. Ormandy, Leibowitz and others treat his works with faster tempi than Herr Schmidt-Isserstedt, but that doesn't mean they forego the heart and soul. (Yes, I place Ormandy above Toscanini and Bernstein - how's that for daring?) I think attempting to conduct all of these symphonies is akin to an actor trying to claim the stamp of greatness by performing Hamlet. You have only to realize after seeing Olivier, Burton, Branagh, Gibson and a few more that there is no definitive way to do Hamlet.
There is not a single way to perform Beethoven either. Maestro Schmidt-Isserstedt performs here not only the nine symphonies, but the violin concerto, the five piano concertos, and the overtures. Too bad he didn't have room for the Romances for violin and orchestra or the incidental music to Egmont (beyond the overture). His point of view becomes clear immediately, and it is a very good point of view. Speed is eschewed in favor of tempi that allow some slight rubato, that allow the bombast but also an incredibly refined sense of melodic line, something some other conductors consider too "Romantic." There is no want of power, and the dynamic range makes car listening difficult - if you can hear the low over the road noises, you'll be blasted in five measures.
The Ninth Symphony line-up of singers is ideal. Few sopranos are as comfy on the top as Joan Sutherland, few mezzos can hold their own like Marilyn Horne. Having James King's flexible yet heldentenor sound is ideal, with the rock-solid Martii Talvela on the bottom. The Wiener Sangverein gives it their all, too. The first three movements are a wonderful build up to the last.
Wilhelm Backhaus plays the piano concertos beautifully, with facile scales and plenty of personality. Henryk Szeryng takes a more lyric approach to the concerto than Stern (whose performance I grew up with), and he takes a different cadenza - not my favorite one by any means. But the performance is a winning won.
The CDs are arranged as eight mini-concerts, so you don't listen only to the concerti or symphonies. You get some programming together that helps.
Any gripes at all? Well, for me, the first movement of the Eroica is a tad prosaic. It plods just a bit. The first movement repeats are not followed. I like the Fifth symphony with that repeat in place. Many don't! The scherzo of the Ninth is missing a repeat, most probably because the symphony was originally issued on one 65 minute LP.
You can't accept just one Hamlet, so you can't accept just one Beethoven Symphonies.

It's amazing to read a totally unanimous consensus about this collection and so i agree. So many reviewers can't be wrong.
This is the Beethoven anthology to get. Those are wonderful and inspired performances by really great artists. Hans Schmidt-
Isserstedt was a great conductor from german old school and a magnificent Beethoven performer. This album includes perhaps
the best Violin Concerto available (with Szeryng and a superb LSO) and regarding the symphonies, it has arguably one of the
best 9th's ever put on record. This is my first recommendation for Beethoven.

The Finest Ninth

I first heard this 9th Symphony perhaps 20 years ago; the Penguin guide gave it a rosette (as I remember) and on that basis I bought the 9th. Although I have many other 9th recordings, this is the one that I continue to prefer above all others. I'm embarrassed that I missed the CD reissue for this long, and I'm making up for lost time.
