Longstanding fans of Mike Stern's jazz-rock guitar playing may label Voices as his "world music album", but he doesn't come across as just another musician jumping on the international rhythms bandwagon. As the title suggests, the nine-track disc is actually conversations that Stern has with various vocalists, including the exciting Cameroonian singer and bassist Richard Bona. Most of the singing is done in the wordless vocal style, with Stern swooping and swirling in and around the singers, in musical dialogues built on the solid compositional grounds that Stern always constructs for his records. Bona is featured on the first two songs, "One World" and "The River", the latter featuring a lyric by the singer in his native tongue, while Elizabeth Kontomanou and Phillip Hamilt on perform on the others. Kontomanou is particularly effective on two deliberate and simmering ballads, "Slow Change" and "What Might Have Been", both of which are less influenced by world music than the three great tracks where the singers work in harmony with Stern's guitar. "Wishing Well", "Spirit" and "Leni's Smile" are all uplifting pieces that get the best out of the album's theme. The hottest track may be "Way Out East", an exploration of jazz fusion at its finest, in which jazz is fused with the rhythms of India. Saxophonist Michael Brecker makes a searing guest appearance on the tune. --Mark Ruffin

曲はすべてオリジナル
彼にしては珍しくヴォーカルやヴォイスを起用して、曲によってはワールドな広がりを見せています。豪華なゲストも魅力的。デニス・チェンバースは３、５、１０曲目に、マイケル・ブレッカーは９曲目に参加している。
題名がヴォイスだけに声を重視している感じ、出だしから賑やかでアップテンポなサウンド。　２曲目はリチャード・ボナのヴォーカルでのポップな曲。サウンド全体にワールドな雰囲気がある。アルバム全体にむらがなくよく出来ているように感じました。
パットメセニーの８０年代後半から９０年代のサウンドを好む方に是非お勧め。

What can I say? This CD is just a gorgeous piece of work. Nothing profound here - no shadows, pretty much all sunshine, but those who remember Pat Metheny in his Nana Vasconcelos period will welcome this effort. Michael Brecker puts in a couple of appearances too, and his strong jazz sound is a perfect counterbalance to the wordless singing of Richard Bona, Elizabeth Kontomanou, Philip Hamilton et al. We oldtimers may remember that Brecker and Metheny had an equally fertile collaboration back in 80/81. And those who fear Mike Stern may have compromised his chops should give a good listen to his blazing work on the final track, "Way Out East". Thanks, J. Dennis, Jazz Longboarder, for your recommendation.

Beyond his superb guitar-playing, Mike Stern is clearly one of the most talented composers writing music today. Every track on this album is amazing. The arrangements are deft, surprising, hard to imagine how they could be improved. In an era when each player/instrument typically has his/her/its own standalone function, Mike Stern has learned how to blend and create composite sounds -- derived not from studio engineering techniques or electronics, but from careful timing and complementary contributions that add up to more than the sum of the individual parts. This album is irresistible, soulful, magnificent, and inexhaustible. I have listened to it repeatedly and carefully, many many times, and I'm not nearly done with it. Track 6 ("Spirit") in particular is especially astonishing.
