EST Live offers an hour of intense, virtuosic, probing music that recalls at times Bill Evans, at times Chick Corea but above all the ecstatic piano style developed by Keith Jarrett in the 1970s. The Swedish trio of Esbjorn Svensson (piano), Dan Berglund (bass) and Magnus Ostrom (drums) flow freely and naturally from reflective, suspended balladry ("The Day After")" into fierce, combative, high-speed workouts ("Like Wash It or Something") where Svensson combines sustained invention with unerring articulation and relentless swing. Svensson always stresses that he is part of a trio and that the music is entirely a team product; this may be slightly questionable, since his work stands out so clearly from the mix, but Berglund and Ostrom are empathetic partners at every turn, shadowing Svensson's initiatives like a reflex and leading the action when the time comes--witness Berglund's unfussily melodic break on "Say Hello To Mr D (to Mr S)". The album charts the trio's progress around Sweden in 1995 and comes with a bonus 10-minute CD featuring "Dodge The Dodo" from Montreux in 1999. The trio's music has evolved, but the quality is constant. --Mark Gilbert

E.S.T.の地元、スウェーデンでは、『Mr. & Mrs. Handkerchief』の名前で1995年に当初リリース。その後、現在の名称で2001年にリリース。本アルバムは、それに1999年のモントレーでのライヴを収録したボーナスCD『Dodge The Dodo" from Montreux in 1999"』を同封した、ボックス・セットというレア盤である。今では、このボーナスCDをボーナス・トラックとして最後に加えたものがリリースされている。

つまり、このアルバムは彼らにとってデビュー作『When Everyone Has Gone (1993) Dragon』に続く、セカンド・アルバムということになる。多くのジャズ雑誌は、このアルバムを激賞し、彼らが世界に認知されるきっかけとなった作品といえるだろう。

何しろ、三人の一体感がスゴイ。既にテクニック的には完成していて、文句のつけようがないジャズ・トリオ・ライヴが展開する。しかし、ご存知のように彼らはここに立ち止まらなかった。『From Gagarin's Point of View(1998)』→『Good Morning Susie Soho(2000)』→『Strange Place for Snow(2001)』という怒涛の三部作をリリースし、こうエスビョルン・スヴェンソンは宣言する。

このライヴは、未だジャズの範疇にいた彼らの貴重な演奏といえるかもしれない。完成したジャズからスタートして、未知の音楽を切り開いた彼らの偉大さをぼくら聴くものは、今、俯瞰的に知ることができる。

Fantastic album, sounds great, the green records look outstanding. But the records are a bit warped, not flat, press is not great I did not bother to return and ask for replacement. Too much hassle. But some people might find it unacceptable for a new record.
