Following on from the enormous success of the first three Adiemus discs and the soundtrack to the SC4 series The Celts (released as Adiemus IV: The Eternal Knot), the whole concern has now gone live and tours the globe presenting the music in concert format. This disc presents the highlights of one such live event, and includes music from all four recordings with a slight bias (four tracks) from the most recent. The mix of Miriam Stockley's distinctive open-throated vocals, the crisp African choir-sound, the simple harmonies and the driving rhythms will be instantly recognisable to anyone familiar with Karl Jenkins's work to date. The "liveness" of the event does give the sound a fillip, however: the acoustic is quite different from the discs and the quality of the voices fresher. The performance is faultless: the Finnish Adiemus Singers don't stagger a single consonant, and the orchestral balance is as clear as a bell. As an overview of Jenkins's work, with its new explorations of Celtic sounds and smoochy jazz elements, it's a great buy. --Warwick Thompson
