Transcendent two-CD set. Direct from UK so it took a LONNNNNNNG time to show up here in WA, USA, about 5 weeks. Customs and all that. But Christophers (the Director) includes lots more pieces than just the two Masses, and his ensemble of The Sixteen voices are like angels in the cathedral (Chichester, Sussex in 1988 and 1989); four each of SATB. The male alto voices are especially entrancing. I have sung baritone/tenor parts in the scores here in America, and these performances have expanded my appreciation geometrically. Maybe they have more in their catalog?
This double cd, by a choir that is arguably one of the best in the world, is a thing of absolute beauty. Their diction and pitch are superb, and the dynamic and tonal ranges they produce make each track a masterpiece. They have that ability to make the choir a complete sound: no individual voice is ever heard. This is perfection in vocal blending. The "Agnus Dei" from the Mass for 4 Voices may well be the most beautiful piece of choral music I have ever heard. If I could have given it six stars, I would !Buy it!
Glorious! I've heard The Sixteen perform live and they are electrifying, sublime. They do justice to the motets and this CD does them justice. Close your eyes and you could be there. And where else could you want to be?
Having owned the Cd for some time I feel I have given it a fair chance to impress, the quality I must confess is uniform throuout the double CD but thats my problem with it. The Sixteen give their usual workman like performance, but it never soars, you are never drawn in and being a double CD you must be compelled to invest time in the second disc. Sorry this sounds like just a job for the busy Sixteen not a labour of love.
