In 1997, with dreamy Ozzie kiddos Silverchair at their commercial zenith and record labels seeing dollar signs, an unassuming pop-rock trio from Texas led by teenage singer-songwriter Ben Kweller sparked a bidding war. As the dust settled, Kweller's band Radish signed with Mercury and released Restraining Bolt; the stately New Yorker magazine weighed in with a profile; and the world had promptly rolled over and fell back to sleep. Sha Sha, Kweller's 2002 solo debut on Dave Matthews's ATO imprint, captures an understandably cynical but not entirely sour 20-year-old. While Sha Sha can be broadly described as melodic, somewhat rickety, frequently acoustic, piano-laced pop--think Ben Folds with less irony--there are some twisted shadings. "Walk on Me," with its propulsive beats and cascading piano line, is a whiny and wide-eyed plea for mercy to a nasty lover; "Wasted & Ready" is built on a series of preposterous rhyming couplets ("Sex reminds her of eating spaghetti / I am wasted but I'm ready") while "Harriet's Got a Song" sticks to a hard-soft formula, alternating between white-hot guitar licks and little tinkling bits. None of the tracks on Sha Sha screams megahit, but Kweller acquits himself as a unique songwriter nonetheless. --Kim Hughes

「Weezer＋Ben Folds」に加えて
「ヘナチョコ＋おセンチ風味」なベン・クウェラー。
　weezerよろしく、ハードなギターにポップなメロディが基本。
しかし一本調子ではなく、鍵盤を積極的に採り入れていたりと、
バラエティ溢れていて飽きが来ない名盤。

なんかね、これ聞いてるとふわぁんとしちゃうんです、気持ちが。カテゴライズするならロックなんでしょうけど、とんがってなくて、柔らかくて、体の力が抜けます。天気のいい日曜日の午後、アイスティー飲みながら日向ぼっこしつつ、これ聞いてたら、何だか特別な事があったわけでもないのに幸せな気持ちになれました。勿論、ロックに必要なエレメントはちゃんと入ってますよ。でも、気持ちがいい、その一言に尽きます、はい。

青春。切なさ溢れ過ぎ。

とにかく歌い方が切なすぎる。

まだ大人になりきれていない少年のような、どこか「どうでもいいじゃん」って言っているような気がしてならないんだけど、ちゃんと芯があるし、この世とか、自分自身とか、ちゃんと受け止めている気もする。

一番すきなのは In other words。

「It starts stopping when it stops stopping…」って繰り返していくところ。この矛盾が言いようもなく、切ない。

このCDは一押しです！！

このアルバム発売時点での年齢はなんと二十歳（ビビッタ）。

発売時期が秋だったのですが、秋の雰囲気にマッチしている物悲しいサウンドと、ベック的なセンス。

後、彼自身がfavoriteに上げている、ペイブメントのローファイ感（フレーズをモロにパクっている部分は微笑ましい）。

とにかく、こういうサウンドは大好きです！！

ぱらぱら～っと何気ないギターやピアノがとてもいい☆
声もいいし歌もいい◎v(-_-)v
「In Other Words」は死ぬほど聞いてる♪心に染みるぜ(T_T)
「Wasted and Ready」「Falling」なんかは一緒に口ずさむ感じ☆
全体にPOPでエンドレスで聞いても邪魔にならないし
捨て曲がないとても良いアルバムだわん。

彼はまだ若いのにほんとにこれからの音楽を引っ張っていく才能をもっていると思う。音楽はBen　Folds的であり、WEEZER的でもある。またUK的であり、USA的カントリーの要素もこのアルバムには感じられる。それは彼自身がテキサスで育ち、girlfriendとUKへ一緒に移り住んだことにも影響があるのかもしれない。
　私がもっとも気に入っているのは２曲目の歌詞。「彼女とのセックスはスパゲッティーを食べてることを思い出す」なんてかなりCOOLだと個人的に思う。UK POP/ROCKが好きな人なら是非聴いてみるべきだ。BKは人生を楽しんでいる。サンキュー、SHA SHA !

ファーストのこちらではなくセカンドの「On my way」を先に聞いて、気に入ったので聴いてみた。
実は「僕って甘えん坊なんです」といわんばかりの可愛いジャケットだったのでちょっと敬遠していたのだった。
他の人が書いているように、WEEZERを彷彿とさせるパワーポップという印象だ。若さ爆発！と匂わせておいて、どこかセンチメンタルな雰囲気を漂わせるあたり、この人ただものではない。
ベン・クウェラーの音の引き出しは、奥深そうだ。
これからも注目したいアーティスト！

Simply put, Ben Kweller's music is fun, easy to relate to, and easy to sing along to. If you are sick of today's overproduced flash-in-the-pan, making CD's just because they're pretty singers, then you should try Kweller's quirky, indie-rock, sometimes a little pop, sometimes a little country sound. After picking up my first Ben Kweller CD just on a whim at a music store, I went out and found all the rest and have been a fan ever since.

Ben Kweller est lancé dans la lignée d'un Beck: pop bricolo lo-fi qui se veut inventive. En vérité, plus malin, le gars Kweller se situe à la croisée de trois chemins: la pop de Beck mais sans génie mais par contre avec une grosse louche Beatles pour les morceaux les plus réussis, le grunge encore chaud pour les guitares abrasives sur certains titres mais également les brisures de rythmes (succession lent/rapide) et l'americana d'un Wilco ou plutôt des Jayhawks dans le fond. C'est d'ailleurs là qu'il devrait insister. Car, effectivement, voilà un premier album prometteur, jamais foncièrement génial ni original mais très correct. Trop malin, peut-être, car Ben Kweller n'a jamais su, depuis, faire un album aussi bon, mais aussi et surtout creuser son sillon en trouvant un style propre. On sentait pourtant le gars bourré de qualité (relire le début...) mais il a finalement fait pschitt, peut-être par manque de réelle épaisseur. Reste un disque pop de qualité, mais sans réelle profondeur ni portée.

I purchased his more recent album, On My Way, prior to purchasing this one. I was immediately a HUGE fan. I listen to that album twice a day every day. I LOVE it. This guy is very talented.

Now, about Sha Sha. This is a pretty darned good album. It has good songs, well played and it has a down to earth modestly produced sound that I love. Sha Sha also features a lot more crunchy guitars and piano than the lovably lo-fi On My Way. For better and worse...

On the down-side, Ben appears to still be searching for his sound. He goes from sounding like he is channeling Weezer (honestly, the second song, Wasted and Ready, is indistinguishable from Weezer) to sounding like the Old 97s (Family Tree), and then Ben Folds (In Other Words.) All great influences in my opinion. But his own sound, which is clearly evident on On My Way, is far more interesting.

My recommendation: buy it. It is a very good album from a very talented guy and it won't disappoint. Then buy On My Way.
