I first came across Gary on the Stones Throw 101 DVD, on which he performs "Linda Wants to Be Alone". I didn't care much for this, but he was an obvious character, with otherwordly shade, covered in pancake makeup, wearing what appearing to be a battered old shoebox on his head, and the music was clearly meant as outsider art, treated vocals, somewhat awkward. I wasn't sure I liked it, but it somehow stuck in my head.

More recently I read a review in The Wire which praised this, his debut 1977 release, so I took a chance, but I was really glad I did, because it's great! The mood is definitely mid-1970s New York jazz pop ala Steely Dan, hints of Pink Floyd guitar, some notes of Zappa, circa Zoot Allures; a little disco. The arrangements are great, Rhodes, raw'n'funky synth bass, crisp drums and fuzztone guitar.

In another universe these would have been huge hits and would be very familiar. In this universe, though, they couldn't have been. Gary's singing style is not exactly melodic - he sort of chants his way through his songs, punctuated with "Ay!" (think Fonzie) or "Ha!" or "Woo!". He seems to be obsessed with certain girls ("Karen" pops up a few times). He seems to want to take them to the beach, or take them out at specific times (he will take real groovy chicks out about 9:20 and then walks them home about midnight). Most bizarrely, he keeps sings about "making out" with these girls: Cindy, for example, makes out "like a mink". Whatever you do, don't put a "sick trip" on him, whatever that is.

The subtle oddness of the lyrics and the sweetness of the music is a winning combination, although I am left wondering how much of this is for effect.

If you enjoy Ariel Pink's home-made excursions into the more avant-garde regions of pop music, or any outsider musicians, I can recommend this. Like Ariel, it's actually a very easy listen, but there's more than enough experimental edginess on display here to satisfy most freak-seekers.

Although it's true that Gary Wilson might not be everyone's cup of tea (especially if you like your pop music on the conventional side), I have long considered this one of the greatest albums ever recorded, brilliant, utterly unique, funny, moving, bizarre, wonderful! (I was lucky enough to buy an original copy when it first came out, and have been singing its praises ever since.) But most of all, "You Think You Really Know Me" is REAL--a totally honest, non-commercial creation from someone making music the way he wanted to, completely from the heart, as opposed to the music-by-committee mediocrity littering the airwaves today.
I am thrilled that "You Think You Really Know Me" has been re-issued, giving a wider audience the chance to experience the artistic singularity that is Gary Wilson, and his unique musical world of mutated jazz-pop, Fender Rhodes electric piano, Farfisa organ, synthesizer melodies and bass lines, fuzz guitar, sophisticated chord changes, bizarre sonic interludes--all coalescing in demented (or tongue-in-cheek? only Gary knows for sure) odes to make out parties, red lips, groovy girls at the beach, Cindy, Linda, Karen...this feeble description does not even begin to convey the full impact of this decidedly unconventional album. You simply have to hear it to get the feeling.
Most people I know absolutely flip over this record when I play it for them--especially musicians--and I can tell you, it is one of the five albums I would take to a desert island were I forced to save only a handful of treasured recordings. Believe it! It is a record I simply HAVE to play again and again at regular intervals--I love this album!

Granted, if you have no brain or no musical appreciation and like popular garbage crammed down your throat, you probably won't like this album. It is weird. So weird that there are several songs that are very difficult to listen to. However, there are classics.
Gary Wilson is a genius waiting to be discovered. Unfortunately, this is unlikely to happen. He falls so far out of the main-stream that he ends up in the river of forgotten music. However, I assure you; with an open mind and a musical interest for funky 70's porn music with a touch of Starsky and Hutch, you'll be ready to tackle this monster.
If your iffy....may I recommend the later release of Forgotten Lovers. Much more laid back and without the weird progressions; plus, a totally b*tchin album.
It's too bad Gary never hit it big, but unfortunately the public is ignorant and refuses to critically analyze music. If a big name studio promoted this album, it might have had a chance. However, the Blind Dates are long gone, and it is too bad. However, Gary is coming back! A new release and some more great music. Definitely check him out if you're into Beck's Midnight Vultures album.

Gary and I were very close friends from grade school. And, I have many dear memories. The performances, music, and basement recording sessions provided key elements in my development as a human being. Gary 'touched' everyone who knew him.
My old vinyl copy had a warp from improper storage. I had a cassette copy, but there's nothing like having a CD copy of "You Think You Really Know Me". The memories are fantastic! My two favorite cuts are still "6.4 = Makeout" and "You think you really know me". The lyrics and sound/music blend into a mystical experience.
Gary had a very keen music sense from his earliest age. He was always leading us (our very close-knit group) into new experimental directions; whether it be music or other artistic expression. This recording is the culmination of those experiments and more importantly, a defining moment for Gary's musical expression and an emotional outpouring of his deepest emotions.
Every serious artist must have a copy.
