5つ星のうち5.0 オーガスト・ダーネルの集大成！最高傑作!!
2008年7月17日に日本でレビュー済み
80年代初頭に「ドンドン・ココナッツ！」なんて意味不明なコピーが
付けられウイスキー（ビール？）のCMにまで登場してビックリしましたが、
その後にはコピーバンド「米米クラブ」が大ブレイクし、すっかり日本で
の主導権をカールスモーキーさんに取られてしまったキッド・クレオール
ことオーガスト・ダーネル率いるバンドの最高傑作がこのアルバムです。
オリジナル・サヴァンナ・バンド時代のアルバムや、プロデュース作品を
含めても、セールス数を別にしても内容的にもこのアルバムの完成度は
群を抜いています。
ダーネルのアルバムはどれもこれも完成度は高く、仕掛けられた遊び心、
客を楽しませるサービス心には感服するばかりですが、中でもこのアルバム
の楽しさは出色です。
サウンド的には、当時のトレンドであったファンカラティーナのブームを
反映し、FUNK色が強まりダンス・ミュージックとしての完成度を高めて
います。シングル・ヒットした「I'm A Winderful Thing, Baby」(邦題は
「なんたって一番」・・・ひ、ひどい、ひどすぎる〜っ。全曲の邦題が
ひどすぎる事でも有名なアルバムです）は、ラテン・ファンクの永遠の名曲
です。ジャケットのイナたさ加減もとってもGoodです。
この後、「ドンドン・ココナッツ」こと「Don't Take My Coconuts」の日本
でのヒットなども経て、ダーネルはその輝きを徐々に失って行きます。
まさに脂の乗り切った、最高に旬な時期のダーネルの仕事がこのアルバムです。

No doubt: this is The BEST Kid Creole album EVER! And I could prove it with logic and mathematical progressions (!), but I'm gonna make this short `cause I could wax poetic for days about the whole Savannah Band/Kid Creole mofongo.

I'm a hard core fan from back in the day. Saw K. & Coc's when they first performed in small live venues in NYC, my hometown. Go Ritz! For this album, the entire band and production crew were at the height of their musical and performing powers. Their live shows were amazing in that they perfectly portrayed the polyglot tropical funhouse world that they created on their albums, and then proceeded to outdo them onstage! First, they faithfully recreated the incredibly rich aural experience from the albums, and then they blew you away with their showmanship, stage production, and amazing musical chops! Everything about this album and stage show was Kid Creole and the Coconuts at THEIR ABSOLUTE BEST! There is not a bad or mediocre cut on this entire album, so I disagree with some of the reviewers here who say that "Off The Coast of Me" is better. WHAT!!! Puh-LEEEEZE! If you think `Coast' is better than `Gangsters', then you don't understand what the Kid is all about ( except #1 reviewer Dejan K. Right on brother! ). `Gangsters' is the Kid at his artistic and commercial best. 'Coast' has Maladie d'Amour and Yolanda - that's all. And although I love `Doppelganger', it's a bit overproduced IMHO, too glossy. `Gangsters' is gritty both in sound and subject, which captures and reflects the Kid's native NY origins and the early 80's New York music scene that he and I both loved. Long live Adriana, Cheryl, and Carol C. !!! Peace.

Album re-mastérisé avec de nombreux titres en bonus (dont un excellent remix de l'incontournable "Annie...")

als diese Scheibe herauskam. Beflügelt durch einen sehr gekonnten und mit guter Laune strotzenden Auftritt beim Rockpalast habe ich damals die Scheibe mir zugelegt und muß sagen, daß sie die Zeit nicht ganz überdauert hat....Einzig Stool Pigeon ragt hervor, wie gesagt aus heutiger Sicht. Damals waren das sehr originelle Titel, mit witzigen Texten (say if I was in your blood, then you wouldn't be so ugly...arme Annie!) gute Laune Musik von einer Band mit einem Angeber als Bandleader, einem überdrehten Latino an den Bongos, einer Bassistin, die ihr Instrument mehr als beherrscht und drei durchaus ansehnlichen "Hupfdohlen" sowie einer Big Band. "The Love We Have" ist nachwievor mein Lieblingssong, mein persönlicher, weil es einen netten Rhytmus hat. Wer also in diesen grauen Frühlingswintertagen was für die gute Laune braucht, sollte sich diese Platte auflegen.Sie nimmt einen an die Hand und führt zu wärmern Gefilden, eben Tropical Gangster, ohne einenm aber die Zeit zu stehlen.....daher 5 Sterne
