前作Nightlifeのダークな雰囲気が少々なじまなかったボクですが、
このReleaseは、ぴったり心に入り込みました！！
彼ら特有のピコピコサウンドは控え目で、メロディの美しさをストレートに伝える曲が満載です。
近年のライブでも、ニールがフォークギター１本の弾き語りで淡々と歌う、
You Only Tell Me You Love Me When You're Drunkの素晴らしさは特筆でしたが、
正にその雰囲気がアルバム全体に漂っています。
PopArtから外された名曲Londonも入っています。
で、どうせ買うんなら、他の方がオススメのとおりこのボーナスCD付きがいいですよ！！
シングルSexy Northerner、Break 4 Love、
そしてCloser To Heaven (Slow Version)なんてのもコレクションできます。
更に、PCビデオHome And Dryも楽しめますね！！

ジョニー・マーの参加は、本作の叙情性を更に深い味わいにしています。
２００２年作。

叙情的なペット・ショップ・ボーイズが好きなので、この作品もお気に入りですが、このアルバムの曲って何か全曲アルバムのラスト・ソングを集めたかのような趣があります。
どの曲にも共通する切なさと達観・・・。

派手さはないのですが、好きなんです。

初めてアルバム全体を通して聴いた時、
いつもとどこかが違うと感じた。
きっとエレクトリカルなサウンドは継続されつつも、
メロディーが優しく味わい深いものになったからだと
思う。今までの刺激的な彼等ではないが、とても大人
になったような印象。
全体にじっくり聴き込むほどに、どんどん好きになって
いく１枚。

Three years after "Nightlife", an album rich in production value but reasonably poor musically, and just three months after the very colourful (and successful) CD from the musical "Closer to Heaven", the Pet Shop Boys decided to come back to something a bit more intimate, just "Neil and Chris in the studio" with a lot of guitar (Johnny Marr plays on six tracks out of ten).
The result is "Release", a lean and mean (45 minutes of music exactly) album, which is overall very beautiful musically but which is, despite appearances, also quite rich in production values.

Despite percussionist Jodie Linscott being credited on eight tracks, it is sometimes difficult to make out real instruments from electronics and, as always with the Boys, there is a lot to listen to on every track. Therefore I do not abide by the cliché on this album that the Boys restrained the production to emphasise the music. On the contrary, there is a more discreet (but still very potent) production enhancing the superb musical qualities of the album.

Where to start? First, Neil Tennant's lyric are this time spot on. By focusing on stories and feelings as opposed to the back and forth between two lovers fighting in "Nightlife", Tennant is back in top form and gives a wonderful range of song lyrics, from cinematic stories ("London", "The night I fell in love", "Birthday Boy") to very accute introspection ("love is a catastrophe", "I get along") through communication between people ("email", "you choose", "Here"). All the songs are superbly written.

But the triumph is also musical. The first single, "Home and Dry" (including a chord inspired from The Police's "Every breath you take") is a beautiful ballad and so is "I get along". "London" should be a war cry from all the foreign talents who decided to move to London to live the dream - and PSBs express this very well. "E-mail" is a very successful and sweet ballad, while "love is a catastrophe", with its haunting chords, ranks among the saddest songs PSBs have ever written. The best song in the album is probably "Here", a very catchy tune while "The night I fell in love" is a very complex song hidden under a very efficient melody. Its reasonably disturbing subject matters (homosexuality, potentially pedophilia, hypocrisy) are addressed under a very sweet and gentle ballad: highly recommended.

In typical Pet Shop Boys fashion, one will have to admire the details, as always: the booklet and the CD box are a class of their own, while the album's songs are themselves perfectly arranged. Also the order of the songs is very well-chosen: in-between ballads and more introspective songs, the Boys have inserted a very efficient dance romp, almost fully instrumental: the great "Samurai in autumn". The only slight disappointment will be "Birthday boy" a little too abstract and convoluted for my taste.

With this album, their best since "Very-Relentless", the Boys, like the eponymous Samurai, can confidently say that really things are not as difficult as they could be.

Well done boys, and keep it up.

After reviewing many of these reviews, I had to speak my mind. I own every single Pet Shop Boys(PSB) Album as well as countless CD singles and have to say that "Release" is one of their best albums. As many have stated, it is quite different, more guitar & vocal driven than techno-pop as they are know for. However, that is what makes this album so interesting and unique. This album reminds me of the "Behavior" album which is my favorite and best album PSB has released. It is sophisticated, has amazing melodies. After listening to "Home and Dry", I had to listen to it over and over and over again as I believe it is one of the best PSB songs they have ever written. It is hypnotic and rhytmic and an amazing smooth sound thatk makes you hit the repeat button again. "Autumn in Sumarai" is a great song as well, much more catchy & dance compared to the rest of the album but incredible. "London" is a fantastic song w/ great guitar rhythm and melody. Many of the other songs take a few times to really grow on you but if you are anywhere near a Pet Shop Boys fan, this is a album you need to get. I got the 2-disc set and am please to say it is well worth it, esp given the extra versions of "Home & Dry". Many of the negative reviewers of this album do not know what they are talking about and are not true PSB fans. These guys have been producing hits for close to 2 decades(20yrs); how many groups have been able to survive let alone be successful that long. Thank God PSB are experimenting and trying new things in their music but still sticking to some of their best basics which people identify them with. They did have some slow patches in the late 90s but how can one say an album like "Very" in 93 was not amazing. Go Out and Buy This Album and Relax and Enjoy It. Perfect music to put on your CD player in a convertible or open your moon roof and hit the road on a sunny day!

Ein Pet Shop Boys fan ist eine sehr treue Spezie Mensch, darauf koennen sich die beiden Englaender verlassen. Sie wissen auch, dass sie fuer ihre Experimentierfreudigkeit immer wieder von ihren Fans belohnt werden. So auch diesmal. Der Einstieg in die deutschen LP-Charts von 0 auf 3 und das bei einer Band die tief aus den 80er Jahren kommt. Oder liegt es eben daran? Das kann und will ich nicht glauben.
Ich bin seit 1984 Pet Shop Boys Fan und bin immer wieder überrascht, wie sie es schaffen ein meisterhaftes album nach dem anderen zu veroeffentlichen. Wie machen die das nur???
Als "Very" rauskam war ich begeistert und dachte "besser geht's nimmer" aber als "Bilingual" veroeffentlicht wurde, durfte ich mich eines besseren belehren lassen. Ebenso sah es bei "Nightlife" aus und nun "Release".
Bei diesem Ergebnis wartet man gern geduldig auf das neue Album. Und fragt sich, kann es das Niveau seines Vorgaengers ueberhaupt wieder reichen?
