I love vintage hardcore punk and the F.U.'s have to be one of my absolute favorites. They emerged in 1981, when they recorded tracks that would end up on Modern Method's seminal hardcore compilation "This Is Boston Not L.A." and the 7" that would follow it "Unsafe At Any Speed." These releases also included the likes of a young GangGreen, Jerry's Kids, and the Freeze, but I have to say that the contributions by the F.U.'s are the best of any to be found. I know this is an unpopular opinion (everyone always says that GangGreen was the best), but I'm going to stand by it.
Just for starters, I feel that Steve Grimes may have the best punk rock guitar tone of ALL TIME on classic tracks like "Preskool Dropouts" and "CETA Suckers." "Green Beret" is a masterpiece as well, with lyrics critiquing the military and government, all in a timeless and catchy military anthem fashion. For 1981, "Radio Unix USA" is extremely raging and fast hardcore. I mean it, all these tracks are CLASSIC; I will listen to them as long as I live.
The band followed it up in 1982 with the "Kill For Christ" 12" (with cover art provided by Pushead), also included here in its entirety, and while I don't feel the band ever quite recaptured the brilliance of those initial compilation sessions, the record is still a rarity and it's forever frozen in time here on CD. I hear a heavy Angry Samoans influence on a couple of these tracks, but that's never unwelcome now is it.
"This Is Boston Not L.A." is now out of print on CD and commanding a pretty penny on Amazon, so do yourself a favor and get the material from the finest band on the compilation all collected on this one convenient CD. Kudos to Taang for opening the vaults and making this available again. Act quick though, otherwise this too will go out of print (but get a copy and it will never go out of your CD player!).
