Manchester-based hip-hop DJ Mark Rae presents his debut solo album Rae Road and is probably best known as one half of Rae & Christian. Recorded over a two-year period, Rae Road sees the Grand Central label boss exploring his own take on off-kilter instrumental hip-hop, free of the guiding hand of studio partner Steve Christian. Throwing in elements of funk, disco, reggae, soul and breaks, Rae creates something far more varied and loose-limbed than his previous work--kind of like classic Rae & Christian without the soulful polish. At times, Rae Road is akin to a rougher, lo-fi version of Aim's Cold Water Music--at others, it sounds like the best album Mr Scruff never made. Somehow managing to be funky, raw and laidback all at the same time (particularly on the impeccable vocal numbers), it's undoubtedly Rae's greatest work yet. --Matt Anniss

Didn't know anything about the fella until I met him when I was fishing! Top bloke. He only mentioned that he worked in the entertainment industry,so I Googled him when I got home and then bought this album. Really enjoy it, although not what I usually listen to.
