Intergalactic Sonic 7"s, which arrives hot on the heels of their blistering "Burn Baby Burn" success, confirms what everyone knew already--Ash are a great singles band. It's amazing how often they pull off a perfect three minutes--even though just teenagers at the time of their debut. Witness the bittersweet memories of "Girl From Mars", the rain-lashed, drunken teenage love of "Goldfinger" through the glorious adolescence of "Oh Yeah" (and who hasn't experienced that hormonal surging as "her hair came undone in my hands"?). Compiling a standard tracklisting would always be a hideous undertaking, hence the proud emergence of this 19 track beast instead.
The Free All Angels singles continue this remarkable tradition, best demonstrated in "Sometimes", a song as close to perfection as possible that--along with "Shining Light", "Burn Baby Burn" and "Walking Barefoot" (not actually a single, but one that should have been)--show the maturity in Wheeler's songwriting and musicianship that resurrected his band from the edge of disaster after the fallout from the non-conforming Nu-Clear Sounds. Token new track "Envy" seems pale in comparison, largely due to the quality of Free All Angels material, but at least the grimy New York gutter riffage of the swaggering "Jesus Says" and summertime exuberance of "Wildsurf" are given the air they need here. Also present is the much-underrated but indispensable "A Life Less Ordinary", finally in a place that it deserves along with some earlier efforts ("Petrol") that perhaps are not. Ash are what teenagers with guitars should sound like, because teenage boys care about girls and getting wasted, not becoming victims of conformity. --Ben Johncock

Vielen Dank für die Musik aus der ""Alten Zeit ".
Damit hängen Erinnerungen an längst ver-
gefangene Tage zusammen.
Ash, to my ears, fall somewhere in between, they write their own songs, are a band, rely heavily on melody but are pretty guitar driven as well, let's just call them Pop Rock and be done with it!?
Anyway, the album itself is chock-full of hits. Most are melodic rock songs 'Jack Names The Planets,' others grand and almost orchestral 'There's a Star' / 'Shining Light' and others more or less straight up rock songs 'Burn Baby Burn' / 'Jesus Says,' the borderline metal 'Numbskull' being a bit of an anomaly and a good one at that.
I remember seeing a lot of them as videos on Kerrang! when it was actually a rock channel and not shoving rubbish emo and metal bands like Asking Alexandria or whoever down viewer's throats, so I assume most of these tracks are singles and most definitely sound that way inclined.
For Ash enthusiasts? I don't know! I've only ever heard the songs on this album and have never listened to any of their standalone albums.
I do believe it was released just before the 'Meltdown' album and unfortunately doesn't feature that albums's fantastic single 'Orpheus,' apart from that and all else since, I can only assume this CD is a comprehensive collection of Ash's best songs and release up until that point.
This does include the 'Cosmic Debries' bonus disc, which is essentially B-Sides and most, whilst not poor by any stretch are pretty unspectacular and forgettable. I can't see myself listening to it again any time as they sound exactly like B Side fillers, but at this price who can gripe?
Ash are the sort of band that will have their own programme on BBC4 in a few years time, and a discussion where no one will be able to work out how they never made a bigger impact.
Very under-rated band and some terrific songs
