Pure Escapism, a compilation of the Cosmic Rough Riders b-sides, outtakes and rarities, is also a farewell, of sorts: despite the lavish critical praise and reasonable commercial success reaped by their 2000 debut Enjoy the Melodic Sunshine, singer and principal songwriter Daniel Wylie has quit the group. While the Cosmic Rough Riders will apparently continue without him, it would be a surprise if they managed to recapture the easygoing, exuberant magic theyve collected here.
Everything on Pure Escapism adheres to the template the Cosmic Rough Riders established on Enjoy the Melodic Sunshine: they are a band who believe with a religious fervour in chiming electric guitars, three-part harmonies, and the back catalogues of the Byrds, Big Star and the Beach Boys. Some tracks here are alternative takes on songs that appeared on that marvellous debut: a charming acoustic version of "Melanie", and a (pointless and inferior, it must be said) remix of "The Pain Inside". The rest, though the Cosmic Rough Riders might regard them as flotsam, would light up as obvious highlights on albums by almost any of their contemporaries: "I Got Over You", "Annie" and "Your Eyes" are all pop as near to perfect as makes no odds. --Andrew Mueller
