タイトなドラムにメロディアスなボーカル、ちょっとハードなギターが奏でる極上の音楽。基本的にコンパクトな曲が多いが、どの曲にもアイデアがいっぱい。後半の２曲はプログレッシブな味わいもある。他のアルバムも傑作揃いなので併せて聴いてほしい。

凄いバンドです。
TOOLファンの間でじわじわ注目を集めているDredgの2nd。
語弊を承知でわかりやすく説明すると、「AENIMA」から不気味さとドス黒さをさっ引いて、代わりに透明感とa perfect circleの“3 Libras”ばりの切なさを足した感じ。
興味が湧いた方は迷わず買うことをおすすめします。後悔しませんから。そこらの単純なフォロワーとは違います。

突出した何かがあるわけではないけど、叙情性のある楽曲を上手い歌と演奏で聴かせてくれる。
曲数は多いですが、飽きずに聴きとおせます。他のアルバムもそろえたいと思います。

toolのフォロアーと言ってしまえば、そのままだがこのアルバムが持つ空気感や雰囲気などはtoolを超えていると思います。曲単位ではなく、アルバム全体を通して評価して欲しい一枚です。

"Dredg" are new to me. I heard parts of this album first and bought their catalog. To me "El Cielo" is the most eclectic and adventurous. The format of the album with it's soundscapes followed by more traditional songs works well, leaving a mysterious aura to the album.

You can tell "Dredg" has something going for them as the chorus kicks in on "Same Lo'Road", a mix of funky bass line to laconic guitar rock, crashing into truly memorable vocal lines and terse arrangements well beyond this band's time together.

It sounds like a great band that's made it's breakthrough album, except this is only the 2nd "Dredg" CD.

The use of the studio is excellent, with lots of sonic surprises and changes that are unexpected. Yet "Dredg" don't revert to production tricks and the latest "it" sound effect.

In general you get well crafted songs with a good mixture of synth and found sounds that mix and push songs along. The vocals are not dramatic yet have great drama. Unlike many singers with vocal affectations we hear earnest, genuine vocals with fine lyrical quality.

Think of a Pink Floyd kind of vibe from the "Meddle-era" and add the fine songwriting of bands like The Dismemberment Plan's Emergency and I era of very smart, sometimes quirky songwriting and killer performance. At other times there's a bit of "Spoon" quality songwriting.

To some degree there's a soft-loud-soft pattern to "Dredg's" songs along with a slight progressive rock background where the band take sonic and song structure risks.

Thankfully, they succeed in all ways and make for a wonderful listening experience. It is the little things that make "El Cielo" such a pleasure. Initially, the album works because of it's mixture of dreamy quiet verses that grow into loud melodic rock.

But it's on additional listenings that you appreciate the small things done, like a small moment where unique sounds and fills display how deeply recorded and worked upon this album is.

In other words, it's a fun listen and it has lots to keep you interested in, not only by it's catchy songwriting, but by the small things that often are lost on lesser bands. The unexpected progressive rock hints are so subliminal people that hate that kind of music won't notice it unless picking for scabs, so to speak.

Great album, great songs, great performances. This is a must-have if you enjoy rock and pop.

Rockmusik ist nicht mehr das was sie einmal war. Der penetrante Gestank von Selbstbeweihräucherung und der ewigen Wiederverwertung lässt sich schon längst nicht mehr ignorieren. Nur noch wenige Lichtblicke ragen aus dem tristen Einheitsbrei heraus. Einer davon sind Dredg. Der Sound von Dredg lässt sich nicht gerade leicht eingrenzen: Irgendwo zwischen Sigur Rós, Incubus und den ruhigen Deftones könnte man sie im Plattenregal vorfinden. El Cielo ist mittlerweile das 2. Album, wobei ihr Debüt "Leitmotif" nicht wirklich wahrgenommen wurde und vor dem Release des Nachfolgers auch so gut wie nicht mehr erhältlich war. Produziert wurde das „Werk" von Ron St. Germain (u.a. Tool).
Eins vorweg: das Album ist ein Meisterwerk das seines gleichen sucht. Vom ersten Titel bis zum letzten Ton wird eine Spannung aufgebaut, der man sich nicht mehr entziehen kann. Klare, saubere Töne bilden einen sphärischen Klangteppich, auf dem sich die geschulte Stimme des Sängers Gavin Hayes bewegt. Dabei dominieren selten verstärkte Gitarren - vielmehr geben eine Vielzahl verschiedener klassischer Instrumente (z.B. Streicher, unterschiedlichste Bläser), Choräle und außermusikalische Elemente den Songs ihren einzigartigen Charakter. Die Effektgeräte (mit dem neuen Plattenvertrag haben sich die technischen Möglichkeiten geradezu potenziert) werden bis zum Anschlag ausgereizt, was die Klangdichte an manchen Stellen (vor allem in den episch ausbrechenden Refrains) auf eine geradezu atemberaubende Ebene führt. Konventionelle Strukturen sucht man vergeblich. Viele Wendungen und Verschachtelungen fordern die Aufmerksamkeit des Zuhörers, was man beim ersten Hören abschnittweise durchaus als „anstrengend" empfinden kann. Mit jedem Durchlauf entdeckt man neue Fassetten und Details, was das Album zum absoluten Dauergast im CD-Player macht.
Dredg sind einfach erfrischend originell und werden das Rock-Genre nicht unberührt lassen. Ich kann nur jedem, der den eingangs erwähnten Bands etwas abgewinnen kann, raten sich El Cielo anzuhören - es lohnt sich. Für mich garantiert eine DER Platten 2002 ...
