Tuneful and atmospheric, The Gondoliers comes closer to conventional operetta than most Gilbert and Sullivan works. Two young men learn that one of them is heir to a throne. But no one knows which is the prince and which is the gondolier, so they travel to the fictitious kingdom of Barataria to rule jointly. Sullivan's Italianate score--his most radiant--sets the tone, though there's a fair helping of Gilbert's trademark wit. The result is exceptionally mellow for G&S.
This production (part of the Opera World series of Gilbert and Sullivan works, made for British TV in the 1980s) is well done in a straightforward way, neither gimmicky nor very imaginative. The cast, a mix of Savoyards, opera singers, and stage actors, is pretty good vocally and comically. Things would be more stimulating if Tom McDonnell and Francis Egerton, in the title roles, were less generic. Marco and Giuseppe are impossibly idealistic: kings naive enough to believe in democracy. They should be adorable (like other Gilbert and Sullivan leading men, they're pursued by an entire chorus of women) as well as absurd. These performers offer only mild personalities and reasonable voices. As with many productions in the series, this one suffers from less than perfect technical values. The performers are badly amplified; you can tell when someone has stepped away from a microphone. And the actors sometimes address their lines to persons unknown offscreen, which suggests an attempt to save money by cutting down on cast size. --David Olivenbaum

On the whole this presentation was quite satisfying.

But I love this show so much that I can't be deterred by the flaws mentioned above. The opening 18 minutes or so of continuous music is my favorite G & S sequence, with wonderful song following wonderful song. The opening women's chorus always gives me chills. I think "The Gondoliers" shows Sir Arthur at the very peak of his brilliant melodic powers. Once I see the show live or play a recording of it, I keep playing the score for a few days because I have to hear it over and over! I love Gilbert's satire, particularly his lyrics for the Duke and the Duchess's song about their various swindles.
I enjoy all the performers, though I want to give special mention to the wonderful Sandra Dugdale as Casilda and Fiona Kimm as Tessa. Oh and Francis Egerton and Tom McDonnell as the gondoliers. Hell, I should name everyone because all the performances give me some degree of pleasure. I know some posters find Keith Michell to be a bland Grand Inquisitor, but I thought he conveyed well the GI's boredom and blasé attitude about the situations he found himself in. (I saw the Savoyaires perform this show in Evanston, Illinois, a couple weeks ago, and I was struck by the actor playing the Grand Inquisitor, who delivered his lines with a broadly smiling sneer as if he were channeling Paul Lynde, which was an amusing approach.)
I will treasure this DVD for a long time.
But for the most part-- we'll done
Keith Michell does his best while somehow not quite having what it takes for such a role. The two gondoliers are hardly Brad Pitt and his twin brother! - but both have competent voices.
The best performances - singing, acting and "presence" - are from the Duke, the Duchess and Tessa.
