Fantastic repress of an electronic classic

Fantastic mastering on triple red vinyl that includes all of the tracks on the Airdrawndagger CD. The sound is warm, loud and deep. This is a beautiful electronic masterpiece, if you like Sasha's sound, this pressing of it is well worth having.

First off, let me just say that I don't really follow Sasha and thus I am not a huge fan of him, that doesn't mean I don't like him. All it means is that I don't have that influencing my high rating.
Let me give you a quick rundown on how my audio system is setup, since that had some influence on how I rated it. I listend it through my computer. I have the signal split and one goes to the pc speakers (somewhat cheap with a subwoofer). The other end goes to a DSP (Digital Signal Processor) that creates a dolby pro-logic type surround setup in headphones. This makes the audio sound a little more "fuller". I have a good pair of headphones that are open-air, this allows me hear what's happening around me while listening to the music. I have both the headphones on and the speakers. I use the pc speakers for the bass so I can really feel the bass, and the headphones for the high quality mids and highs. Plus since I can hear the pc speakers through the headphones, it makes it sound even more fuller.
The reason I took the time to tell you that is because that setup really shined with this cd. It sounded great from beginning to end. Like others have said, this isn't a dance album. Although there are some songs with good beats, I'd doubt hearing any of these in clubs unless they are overlayed onto other tracks or they get remixed to make them more club-like. It's hard to define exactly what style of music this is. The closest I can think of is ambient-trance. It's very light and airy, like trance, but the slow melodic beats is very ambient in nature. So don't expect to get up and start dancing to this. This is a good cd to play durring that long commute to work or school. It also makes good background music for both everyday activities and when you are entertaining guests.
Now I will try to breakdown the songs. I can sum it up best by saying the entire album is one large 68 minute progressive song. The intro (Drempels) gets your primed and ready for what's to come. Gives you about a minute and half to get situated and comfortable in your favorite chair and to sit back and relax. Then it starts (Mr. Tiddles). The beats start to get you into the trance and becomes an adicting song really quick. (Magnetic North) Again, you get a good a baseline with synths and you get even more relaxed. This is when you get your first taste of the break-beats to come. (Cloud Cuckoo) Since there are plenty of reviews on this track, I won't say much except it's another quality track to keep you in that trance. (Immortal) Here comes the break-beats again. This track takes on more of a darker ambience then what you've heard thus far, and will hear in the rest of the album. (Fundamental) This is actually one of my favorite tracks. At about the 3:00 mark is when I really start to like the "swoosh" sound. (Boileroom) It's pounding beats and psytrance-like melodie gives it a really nice sound. (Bloodlock) This is the track that has the greatest chance of hitting the club scene. Has a typical trance baseline with the usual synths found throughout the album, and yet it doesn't feel repetative. (Requiem) I feel this is the climax of the cd. Now that we have you in this trance state, now we really hit you. This track is purely ambient. No real hard pounding beats, not even a lot of complicated synth action happening. (Golden Arm) Here's another possible club candidate. Now it gets a little more happy and good sounding to sort of lift you from your groove. (Wavy Gravy) And now it's time to say goodbye. This has a great, happy feeling to it and closes the album nicely.
When you first get this cd, I would really recomend getting a good sound system of some kind, wether it be the computer or home audio, find a nice comfy chair, don't have anyone bother your for a little over an hour. Sit back, relax, and enjoy the ride. What's more important is don't go track skipping or fast forwarding. Listen to it with an open mind the whole way through and then decide if you like it or not. At the least, you should find it interesting.

Good Things Come to Those that Wait

Sasha, alternately known Alexander Coe, hails from North Wales. He is multi-talented and has become one of the world's most renowned and popular DJs. Sasha got started in the late '80s as a club DJ. He got his first big break when he was hired by the notable club called Shelly's to spin and re-work phat tracks of the day.
It was at Shelly's that the young DJ found his first taste of fame. However, It wasn't until he started laying down his grooves at Renaissance that he became a national sensation and, eventually, a global-celeb bpmthumber. His sound and technique was so praised that a Renaissance compilation was released, one of the very first DJ mix albums to ever hit the record stores as many bios on him will state.
Sasha has hooked up with lots of people for collaborations, most notably - John Digweed. This is how I first got turned onto Sasha's talent which then led me to his Global Underground CDs, his smashing material from the game Wipeout and the breakout smash hit - Expander.
Airdrawndagger, is a blissfully mag name for this album. The atmosphere created is ambient but poised with melancholic intensity.
The tracks on this album are not the braggarts of Expander. I don't like to compare other artists to one another but it helps with electronic acts. To elaborate on its concept, Airdrawndagger has a very symphonic, edgey, ethereal, melodic trance quality. Imagine taking a bit of Orbital, slathered with FSOL, fringed with BT, and swirl in a bit of Sasha/Digweed/Gus Gus/Emerson.
It is definitely a very familiar sounding but eclectic set. The songs keep with the theme. There are excellent breakdowns, build ups and harmonies. At times some of the songs even take on a very Electro-Industrial feel because they a have darker side to them. Is this the birth of Industrial Trance? Probably not -- breaking new ground but Sasha is definitely making waves and new fans with his ingenuity and arresting style.
Waiting for an original material release from Sasha has been well worth the wait. Not dissing Oakey (Paul Oakenfold) but Oakey's Bunkka is uninspiring (with exception to Ready, Steady, Go & Setting Sun) compared to Sasha's Airdrawndagger. Sasha is the better buy!
Overall Conclusion: It's a keepa! (It definitely deserves more than 5 stars)
