Okay, this isn't for everyone, and many won't get into it on their first listen. Syzygys composes almost all of their music on a 43-TET organ, with a violin playing in the same scale. The music most of us are used to is composed in 12-TET (12 notes per octave), so Syzygys may sound painfully out of tune to some. This is obviously not the case, but it may be hard to convince anyone otherwise. I, on the other hand, was downright ecstatic upon hearing them for the first time- the strange rhythm and surprisingly catchy melody of DPO got me hooked 15 seconds in. I hope you'll be in the same boat as me!
Anyway, the duo have clearly mastered their instruments, and are fairly good singers as well. The album is clearly no cheap basement recording, and while some tracks are more 'fun' than others, each has its own charm. The slow drone of Fauna Grotesque; the upbeat, dizzying DPO; the Syzygys-response-to-rock-opera-maybe Mawashi; all are super-neat tunes. Whether you buy this album because you're interested in anything from Japan, or you're interested in the technical side of their work, or you simply like the music, you will be buying the last CD you'll ever need.
