I probably haven't got anything new or valid to say (my there's some really high bench mark reviews here. Yikes!) I just wanted to show my love and appreciation for this wonderful album, and join the lovin.
What I've always loved and admired about 'Architecture & Morality', OMD's third studio album is how dark and experimental it is, yet still very commercial sounding. It's such a soundscape of ideas and themes, and their finest work - just like the Minds' 'New Gold Dream' is considered theirs. I love the fact that one minute it's very poppy, and the next it's very dark and gothic. One minute it's uplifting and cathartic, the next it's very doom-laden. The whole album just thrives on atmosphere. There's so much thrown into the mix. It's so multi-layered. I also love the fact that at times 'Architecture & Morality' can't make up it's mind whether it wants to be just a synth-pop album or a post-punk one as well. Think the introductionary track for example, the indie rock sounding 'The New Stone Age' where it sounds like both - what with it's full throttle, jangly guitar intro against a synth heavy backdrop.
As for the three hit singles on this, everyone knows what they are and how great they are, but what I would say is that the sublime, 'She's Leaving' would have made for a great fourth single. Apparently it did get a release, but only in Benelux. Also worth mentioning is 'Georgia'. It's like Andy and Paul are deliberately trying to be as cheesy and upbeat as possible, right up until near the end when it all turns dark and gothic, when the Mellotron kicks in. Genius!
So there you have it. 'Architecture & Morality' is a masterpiece. You must own it.
