UK盤は７曲、日本盤は８曲入りに対して、US盤は１０曲入りと大変お得な一枚です。アランのギター、シンタックスはいつもの如くクリーンな音を出しています。どちらかといえばロックよりだった”IOU”や”ROAD
　GAMES"と比べると、このアルバムはジャズよりになってます。
１曲目の"SAN ONOFRE"を聞くためだけにUK盤、日本盤をすでに持っている人にもこのUS盤お薦めできます。プロローグ的な役目をもった曲なんですが、アランのギターはもうジェット・コースターの如く、上から下へと凄いスピードで駆け回っています。
全部いいんですが、一番気にいっているのが１曲目の"SAN ONOFRE"です。最後の”METARIAL UNREAL”は”ROAD　GAMES”にも”METARIAL REAL”というおなじような曲名の曲があったので、対をなしている曲かと思ったんですが、単なるこのアルバムのエピローグ的な曲でした。２分間、同じリズムの繰り返しです。
ライヴでもおなじみの”ABOVE AND BELOW”、トニー・ウイリアムスに捧げた”THE DRUMS WERE YELLOW”、ドラムにチャド・ワッカーマンを迎えた”DOWNSIDE UP”、ウォルト・フォゥラーをトランペット迎えた”0274”、”TEXAS”と聞き応え十分のアルバムです。
このアルバムも５っ星以上だと思います。

　彼の中では最高傑作ではないだろうか、マニアック度は相変わらずなのだが、ギターの音がとてもきれいなので雰囲気きける。今までの作品の中で一番ポップなセンスが感じられる作品ではないか。

　アランの音楽世界はさらなる進化を遂げたようです。このアルバムのポイントはなんといっても音楽性でしょう。繰り返しや退屈なテーマを逃れた音世界は疲れた心を確実に癒してくれます。
　アランはこのアルバムで始めてデジタルアンプを導入しました。明らかに旧来の音とは違うクリアな音像は秀逸の一言。シンタックスの音色も聴けますがこれもデジタルアンプによるものと思われます。デジタルアンプはチューブをシミュレートしているのですが、チューブとデジタルという観点で過去のアランのアルバムと聴き比べてみるのもいいかもしれません。旧作でこのアルバムと聞き比べるなら『シークレッツ』がお勧めです。

　全編を通して、ホールズワースの華麗なコードワークが堪能でき、どこか幻想的な世界へ聞き手を誘ってくれる。かつての盟友トニー・ウィリアムスに捧げた「ザ・ドラムス・ワー・イエロー」、ロード・ゲームス時代からの付き合いのチャド・ワッカーマンが参加した「ダウンサイド・アップ」、美しいシンタックスの音色が心地よい「アバブ・アンド・ビロウ（リプライズ）」など、どれも名曲ばかり。また、ホールズワースのアルバムとしては初めて、アコースティック・ベースが参加しているのも興味をそそる。とにかく魅力満載の一枚だ。

If you have only just discovered Allan Holdsworth, 'The SixTeen Men of Tain' is a good place to start to appreciate Allan's excellent playing. He is truly one of the planet's masters of his instrument with many other guitarists sighting him as the master. The album is quite jazzy but not overtly so and will appeal to non jazz fans too, sound quality is quite good, but perhaps not quite up there with the best. Recommended.

This is a wonderful record by one of the truly great modern guitarists. Maybe more accessible than his earlier work. I think he is on the same plane as a musician as John Coltrane and I am sorry he is no longer in this world.

Chef-d'oeuvre pas toujours facile d'accès , "The Sixteen Men Of Tain" sonne davantage jazz que jazz-rock , ne serait-ce que par la présence de la contrebasse ( la basse électrique ne figure que sur un seul titre ) et l'absence de claviers . Allan Holdsworth brille plus que jamais par sa haute virtuosité . "The drums were yellow" fait figure d'exemple transcendant : le duo Gary Novak- Allan Holdsworth est renversant et laisse pantois . Un album et un artiste venus d'une autre planète ...

Allan Holdsworth has long been considered a "musician's musician". People rave about his technical ability, i.e., his speed and the difficulty of his unique compositional style, which uses chords and intervals that require astonishing dexterity and control. There is no doubt Holdsworth is a technical superstar. Nevertheless, the aspects of Holdsworth's playing that move me most are his lyricism and his drop dead gorgeous sound and tone quality. His long and luscious lines sound deeply romantic and personal to me. He lets these qualities flourish in "Sixteen Men of Tain".

Allan Holdsworth is one of my favorite musicians, and this amazing album, "Sixteen Men of Tain", is one of my all-time most beloved albums. From the opening lush and exquisite guitar entrance in "San Onofre" with its warm and glorious meanderings through symmetrical jazz patterns to the eternally striving sequences in "Material Unreal", this music is truly beautiful and transports me to new heights every time I listen to it. I am grateful to Allan Holdsworth for triggering many deeply affecting and healing moments in my life. I can't recommend "Sixteen Men of Tain" (and the rest of Holdsworth's music) highly enough. Give it a listen and hear for yourself.
