Jochum understands Haydn
I've always loved Haydn, and own three vintage recordings of the London symphonies: Beecham's (late 50s), Davis's (70s) and Jochum's (early 70s). They are all enjoyable and worth having, but the first two of these present a problem or two.
Beecham was an individualist: very stylish in his own way, and often a pleasure to hear, but is sometimes mannered, and the minuets are often too slow. Furthermore, the acoustics do not match those of the other two.
Davis conducts the excellent Concertgebouw, which is even better than the other two orchestras, and his choice of tempi is almost always convincing, but overall there's a lack of character in his interpretations. (I often disagree with David Hurwitz, but when he wrote, in his rather lukewarm review, that the orchestra is the star of this set, I find that I concur). I feel that Davis didn't love Haydn as Jochum and Beecham did, and I could live without his set.
Jochum's set is, for the reasons given by other 5 star reviewers, a great gift to Haydn lovers. His approach convinces in almost every movement: there's charm, liveliness, and expressiveness, with a sensivity to Haydn's famous sense of humour. There's no exaggeration or individualistic point-making (beware Harnoncourt). There's something very natural about the whole set, such that doubts hardly ever came to my mind, and each symphony gives continuous delight. Jochum often conducted this music and recorded some of it at least three times. He loved it just as he loved Bruckner.
PS: my equipment is quite modest, but to me there's better internal balance and more clarity in the sound than in the other two sets. By cutting the treble I got a really pleasant violin tone. I understand that the sound is much better than on the original LPs.
PPS! If you can't get a good quality second hand set, and can't afford the giant DG box of Jochum orchestral recordings, his Haydn can be heard on Youtube.

Great performances done justice

I've had Jochum's London Symphonies on vinyl for years, and always been rather disappointed. Refined performances but a bit undercooked, the sound lacking at either end and veiled. At the price currently being asked for the set, and looking at reviews elsewhere, it seemed a worthwhile bet to go for the cd recordings. Good decision. It's like viewing a long-familiar painting newly restored. Bass is much fuller, sound more detailed with inner voices clear and well balanced. My only quibble is a slight edge to the upper mid-range, which gives plenty of punch to the brass but a slight stridency to strings above the stave on some of the recordings. Not quite the terrible digital edge that DGG added to some of their earlier transfers from analogue, but a minor distraction. The additional disc of earlier Jochum Haydn recordings is a very welcome bonus.
I'm reminded of the famous Mravinsky recordings of Tchaikovsky symphonies 4,5,6, totally lifeless on vinyl, a treasure on cd. If you have the vinyl set of these Jochum performances and are less than pleased, you might want to take the plunge.

Simfonies excel·lents

No coneixia aquestes simfonies i m'agraden molt.

HAYDN Joseph (1732-1809)/Les 12 symphonies londoniennes/London Philharmonic Orchestra/Eugène Jochum/ D.G./Coffret 5 CD

Qualche anno fa, oltre ai già citati Karajan e Bernstein erano contemporaneamente attivi George Solti, Carlo Maria Giulini, Sergiu Celibidache, Carlos Kleiber, Rafael Kubelik, Peter Maag, Wolfang Savalish, Eugenyn Mravinsky e, prima ancora, Bruno Walter, Otto Klemperer, Karl Böhm, Fritz Reiner, George Szell, Leopold Stokowski, Charls Munch, Dimitri Mitropolus, Ernest Ansermet, Thomas Beecham, Adrian Boult, John Barbirolli...
