First, YES it's a game about colonization. Some reviews are lambasting it for that reason. I recommend taking a more nuanced approach. LEARN from it. It's the disgusting history of colonialism - it happened, and we need to make reparations. To do that, we need to learn about it, talk about it, and make ourselves proficient at pointing out white supremacy and colonial mindsets with the goal of dismantling them and their legacy. This game can actually be a tool to help those conversations. My son (11) and I had good discussions around it (we are a mixed race family, and I am a white male) and why it is problematic, and why it happened. He might learn more about the evils of racism through this game than he does in school.
We could attack Monopoly as a game on similar grounds - in that game you are running around the board buying up "empty" properties, profiting on them, building on them, and making them your own. It doesn't say anything about the lives of the people living on Indiana Ave. The end of the game involves one person ruining the financial lives of others and having the most money, regardless of the damage done to get to that point. Puerto Rico's end is whoever has taken the most money from the people and land of Puerto Rico, after you've collectively taken city and forest land from natives, built on them, and used people to make money for you.
We can argue either way. All I want to say is that this game exists, its mechanics and gameplay are quite good, and you can use it as a tool to learn why colonialism and racism are evil.
I like this game as a resource-management style game. Most of the time, you are strategizing to maximize your resources and potential for each stage of the game, and playing against (or using) other players' actions to achieve your goals. There are also clever built-in limits that require strategy, like the fact that you can only sell one type of each good to the Trader until it's full and gets emptied. Unless you built a building that lets you do it anyway.
The game plays a bit different each time because of random aspects and different strategies that others use. Settling in to a single strategy doesn't work, you have to be agile and thoughtful about what others are doing. You have to notice opportunities and take them before others can.
I'll end by pointing out a few things I don't like about the game. It's got a really complicated set-up with lots of little pieces and tiles. They are pretty cheap in quality. But, after setting it all up, it feels kind of immersive. Also, the rulebook is dense and not reader-friendly like many modern games (or even Catan!). If you're new to playing it, either look up a video and follow along, or expect to spend an hour reading the book before starting. It says everything you need, but it's just dense and verbose. The game has lots of little complicated mechanisms and you have to know each one of them well to play the game.
In conclusion, get the game if you like strategy board games (wide net, I know). And use it as an opportunity to remember the evil of the past and commit to undo them now in the present. And stretch your brain with the opportunities and strategies of this game.
A lot of strategy and the theme is around building up a colony in the caribbean. You will need to refer to the manual to understand a lot of the buildings and there are many paths to victory. Great game.
