８３年発表。アート・オブ・ノイズのデビュー１２インチ・シングル。衝撃的なプロモ・クリップ、匿名性の強いメンバー構成。様々な別バージョンを駆使した販売戦略など、サンプリング・ミュージックの先駆けという音楽的な側面以上に極めてインパクトの強いグループとして記憶に残る人も多いと思うが、その全てがここから始まっている。一時期に出回っていた本作の旧バージョンには「Beat Box」が別バージョンになっているなど、”相変わらず”の展開を見せていたが、その差し替えが評判が悪かったらしく１２年のリマスター盤では元に戻されている。また新たにオクラ入りとなったアルバム『Worship』からの１１曲を加え、そこに更に７曲のボーナスを加えた全２７曲の大盤振る舞い盤の決定版となっているので、1stアルバムを持っているからもういいや・・・という安易な無視はもったいないと思う。
リマスター効果だと思うが、音がかなり生々しくかつ太くなっており、それこそ卓からダイレクトで鳴っているかのようなサウンドとなっている。特にドラムス／パーカッションのサウンドは特筆もので、かなり新鮮だった。
『Worship』の音源は1stアルバム『誰がアート・オブ・ノイズを・・・』の別編集盤のような趣となっており、こちらを組み直して1stアルバムを完成させたのだろう。こちらも聞き慣れた曲が非常に新鮮に聞こえた。

これは2011年に正式にZTTからリリースされている全世界待望の｢Into Battle｣のリイシュー盤です。

仕様は紙ジャケ風です。

"Beat Box"がオリジナルでは無いとのレビューも有りますが、これは以前に｢Into Battle｣がリイシューされた時のレビューの勝手な転載です。あれｈ酷いリイシューでしたので。

プラスで｢Worship｣という1984年に流れた企画版盤がドッサリ収録されてます。

オリジナルの"Beat Box"聴きたい方は安心して購入して下さい。

懐かしい音が聞こえて来ました。今から30年以上前に流行っていた曲です。BEATBOXやMOMENTS IN LOVEが代表曲になるのかな?元々、アートオブノイズの存在を知りませんでしたが、聞いているうちに好きになりました。今回購入したCDのジャケットがプラケースでなかったのが残念でした。なので星4つにしました。曲は良い曲ばかりです。

早くもあれから20年。名曲「ﾋﾞｰﾄ･ﾎﾞｯｸｽ」や「モーメンツ・イン・ラブ」が入ってます。おまけにプロモーションビデオがついています。

ＺＴＴの記念すべきファースト･リリースである『Into Battle With The Art Of Noise』を含むコレクションですが、2003年にリリースされたRepertoire盤と混同してしまわない様にご注意を。あれは｢Beatbox｣がオリジナルのものでない等問題がある商品でした。今回はSalvoからのリリースです。

しかし今回も「Flesh In Armour」と「Comes And Goes」の曲間が忠実に再現されていませんね。「Flesh In Armour」はお仕舞に少々エコーがかけてありますが、この小細工の意図もよく解りません。
まあこの部分に関しては『Daft』収録のものがあれば事足りるわけですが･･･。

さて残る16曲ものボーナス･トラック群ですが、これらは『Into Battle With The Art Of Noise』と『Who's Afraid Of The Art Of Noise』の間にリリースされる予定だった幻のアルバム『Worship』を再現したもののようです。

あらかた『What Have You Done With My Body, God』にてお蔵出し済なので新味は乏しいですが、これが1984年に世に出ていたらな〜等と妄想にふけるのも楽しいかも知れません。

12インチ・バージョンじゃないです。BOXに入っていたカセット・バージョン？ボーナス・トラックもここまで来るとありがた迷惑って感じです。是非、日本独自企画で12インチ・バージョンCD化してほしいです。ボウイみたいにリマスターしないでアナログマスター盤でお願いしたいです。

The opening shot of a sonic revolution. Crash. Boom. Hey! Army now, now now. Nothing was ever the same after this simple EP. For the best and for the worst.

This little masterpiece was one of the first albums to use the sampler to create a whole new world of music. Oh sure, samplers had been used before and the idea of "sampling" wasn't really very new. But, this album was created entirely out of manipulated samples and set the stage for the world of hip hop, techno and industrial music.

Beyond that groundbreaking nature, though, the album is, generally, quite tuneful and melodic. Of course, on cut up tracks like "The Army Now," the band gets a lot of mileage out of looping "in the army now" over and over again. It sounded groundbreaking and hilarious in the 80's and still sounds funny in 2014. The bashing drums and wild editing of "Beat Box" are still pretty good "block rocking beats" and the moody melodicsm of "Moments in Love" is one of the corner stones of new age and ambient music.

I find that this release is worth it JUST for the EP, but ZZT went above and beyond by releasing the original planned long player "Worship." I had no idea this album existed until recently and it was the main reason I bought the album. Basically, the band planned a double-album filled with sonic snippets of piano playing, variations on themes, jazz styles, ambient collages and bashing, crashing and danceable beats. It was designed as an "art" piece and probably would have kept the band firmly in the underground and boosted its esteem with critics today.

However, the track "Close to the Edit" was a surprise hit, so the band quickly discarded the idea and threw together a much shorter, focused version of the album. It took "Beat Box (Diversion One)" from the original album (a wise decision as its easily the best version of beat box) and threw on "Close to the Edit" the title track "Who's Afraid of the Art of Noise?" (renamed from the Worship album) the full-length version of "Moments of Love" (which I believe wasn't on "Worship") discarded almost all the "snippets" (by Anne Dudley piano and hello shortened and inferior version of "Snapshot") and retained only a few of the "ambient" tracks (which were shortened and rendered a little less effective).

This move made the album more palpable for the masses and was probably the right move, beyond the subtle criticism you undoubtedly picked up on in my track description. "Worship" was a bit too aimless in its original incarnation: although I enjoy nearly every track on the album, it's kind of a chore to listen to it at times. "Who's Afraid of the Art of Noise?" is a focused concentration of nearly everything the band did and is a much easier listen.

That said, leaving out the piano bits ignored the melodic flair that Anne Dudley brought to the band and made later more melodic albums by the band seem like they were betrayals of the band's initial sonic concepts. Well, "Worship" proves that the band was into melody right away and mostly into wild diversity.

Repertoire Records hat wieder ein paar Art Of Noise Fans glücklich gemacht – die Re-Release-Firma mit der stets unauffindlichen Webseite beschert uns nun zum 20-jährigen Jubiläum "Into Battle", den ersten Mini-LP-Output der Fairlight-Spezialisten Art Of Noise von 1983. Für einen AON-Kenner, der die Original-LP besitzt und erst dreimal abgespielt hat (um sie zu schonen), ist der Vergleich natürlich spannend.
Nun, wir bekommen etwas dazu, nämlich als Bonus-Tracks die 12"-Maxi "Close-Up", deren A-Seite sehr genial und die B-Seite schwach ist. Als DVD liegen uns die Videos zu "Moments In Love", "Beatbox" und "Close To The Edit" vor, dazu als Neues "Metaforce". Dem gegenüber müssen wir auch ein paar Abstriche in Kauf nehmen: die Discography mit ihren grisseligen Bildern behandelt nur den Repertoire-Output und unterschlägt die gesamte China-Records-Phase (auch im Booklet wird etwa "In Visible Silence" nicht erwähnt). Musikalisch werden wir etwas beschubst durch den Ersatz mit der späteren "Beatbox"-Version – die erste, rauhere und abrupte "Into Battle"-LP-Version mit 4:47 min. ist flöten gegangen. Dafür bekommen wir das unvergessen schöne "Moments In Love" einerseits in der 10-Minuten-"Orgasmus"-Fassung und als vierte Version den kurzen 1:27 min.-Schluss der LP. Fans der ungleich schöneren und unsterblichen 6:59 min.-Fassung "Love" (= "Moments in Love (Beaten)") oder der langsameren Version "(Three Fingers of) Love" müssen zur ebenfalls in jeden AON-Haushalt gehörenden "Daft" greifen. "Donna" wurde zudem endlich von den nervigen Clicks in der Mitte befreit, die es noch auf "Daft" zu hören gibt.
Ist "Close-Up" von einer Maxi-Single aufgenommen worden? Klangfetischisten mögen sich mit mir gerne darüber streiten, ich vermeine ein gewisses Grundrumpeln gehört zu haben. Macht ja auch nichts – nicht jeder hat nach 20 Jahren noch die Originale im Schrank stehen. Mein Fazit: "Into Battle" ist ein Muss für den AON-Fan, die hammerharten Fairlight-Sounds sind nach wie vor faszinierend. Schade ist es um die verlorene "Beatbox"-Fassung, aber die kleinen Extra-Stücke sowie die Videos trösten über diesen Verlust hinweg. Dann muss man eben halt noch mal die Original-LP auflegen.
