These performances are spectacular. Mozart's scoring of these Handel works is restrained and very intelligent, reinforcing the strings and only adding tone colour through wind, brass and slight percussion additions to bring out emotional colour already inherent in the Handel scores themselves. The Mozart score actually increases your appreciation of the brilliance of Handel's work and adds to your understanding of the overall work. These performance exceed the Christopher's (The Sixteen) recording and the Gardiner recording of Alexander's Feast and the Hyperion recording of the St. Ceclia Ode. In this recording the soloists are stunning, celestial I would say. Lynne Dawson, soprano and Alastair Miles are stunning and spectaular, John Mark Ainsley is very good and perfect for the voice range and timbre required. Hogwood conducts with a brilliant understanding of both Mozart and Handel and the synthesis is extremely smooth in its phrasing and intonation. The text is sung in German (as it was translated for Mozart). This is one of Hogwood's all time finest recordings in my opinion. The Cecilia Ode is spectacular as well. The solo singing is glorious. This is a lifetime addition to your library. These performances will not be exceeded. Anyone interested in Mozart and Handel must have these CD's in their collection in my opinion. A desert island choice.
