This disc is a real gem, with its companion "The Entertainer".The original rolls are executed with a vintage piano-reproducer Welte-Steinway 1910, and performed part by Scott Joplin himself (six pieces in total for the two CD)and part by other period pianists. It is a journey in the earth of American Classic Music, the link between the european salon music and the afro american traditional, with a strong classical compositional background as Scott Joplin himself was proud to say. You can listen to it with the real performing style and with an original piano. A revelation.

Scott Joplin. "Elite Syncopations". Classic Ragtime From Rare Piano Rolls 1899-1917. The music on this CD is performed by a player piano. While a player piano can never deliver the interpretive performance of a live piano player, these paper piano rolls deliver very lifelike music, unlike the typical clumsy and mechanical approximation of live piano players delivered by most piano rolls. What you get to hear, is very good, even excellent, player piano music, along with the background sounds of the inner workings of the player piano itself. The sound quality is a major improvement over the available YouTube recordings of player pianos. A lot of old paper player piano rolls do not sound very musical. The timing will be off and notes will be missing, resulting in clumsy sounding mechanical music. Selection 1.) Maple Leaf Rag, is the most famous of the fifteen Scott Joplin compositions presented here ((plus one by W.C. Handy, 2.) Ole Miss Rag)). The songs are great, the note accuracy and music timing of the paper piano rolls is generally very good to excellent, and the performances are spot on, of course. The CD sound is mostly free of any recording problems like rumble, tape hiss, microphone placement, microphone overloading, microphone wind noise, extraneous room noise, echoes, and CD brittleness. Some CD stridency on the high notes is to be expected. Overall, four and a half stars.
Ragtime right off the original rolls. Remastered, lol. I like it more than the modern versions. It has a soul sound that doesn't come with modern instruments. Glad it was made and available.
