I'm a sap for some of Puccini's lesser known / lesser valued operas: Le Vlli, Suor Angelica, La Rondine and Fanciulla del West. Le Villi has an admittedly odd libretto that is so sketchy that it has a narrator explain events between the first and second parts. But the music! It's meltingly lovely, with the soprano and tenor each getting gorgeous music and, rarest of all, even the baritone gets an aria. My first acquaintance with the opera was on LP with tenor Barry Morel and soprano Adriana Maliponte. The recording with Scotto and Domingo is fine, but I like this one more than either. The cover, I suppose, is meant to represent the Willis - the spirits of dead young women who take revenge on faithless lovers. Yes, well, it's not music drama, but I don't care; the music moves me.
This might well be the recording of choice for Puccini's first opera. It's a live recording from 2002 - the audience is inaudible until the final enthusiastic applause. The soloists and chorus are very good if not quite superlative - hence the 4 and a half stars - but the overall performance is very exciting. The conductor obviously believes passionately in the piece and communicates his fervour to the performers - the orchestral playing is superb, bringing out the colours of Puccini's orchestration, already quite accomplished. Excellent recording. I still hanker after a recording without the verses for narrator which the composer inserted in act 2 to explain the off-stage action. These verses impinge on the beautiful opening number of act 2. Still, very enjoyable. Recommended.
