Theodora was Handel's next-to-last oratorio, and though it was a failure at its premiere, Handel preferred it above all his others. It tells of the martyrdom of the Christian Theodora (soprano) and her beloved Didymus (countertenor) at the hands of the Romans, with the villainous Valens (bass) in charge. Septimius (tenor) is a sympathetic Roman soldier and Irene (soprano) is Theodora's pious friend. This new recording presents the 3-hour work complete and is simply beautiful: Sophie Daneman sings Theodora's heart-felt arias expressively and with great innocence and lovely tone; Daniel Taylor's slim-voiced but sincere Didymus is effective; Valens's arias are spiteful and aggressive, and Nathan Berg makes a superb heavy; Richard Croft is magnificent in the complex role of Septimius, making his fast, coloratura-filled music sound easy, and Juliette Galstian is suitably devout and attractive of tone for Irene. As usual, William Christie and his Les Arts Florissants are right on the money, playing and singing with verve and commitment. Every so often the chorus (and Galstian) give away the fact that they aren't native English-speakers, but it hardly matters. Those who love Messiah and want to get to know some more Handel will be happy to encounter Theodora. Recommended. --Robert Levine

William Christie dans son jardin, toujours à mon sens un poil supérieur à Minkowski, dans Haendel mais aussi dans Rameau.

Handel composed some sublime music in his relatively long life, but few works of his match the serene loveliness and ability to move the listener as this late oratorio Theodora, to a libretto by the Rev Thomas Morell.
The title character was an early Christian martyr (not from the Bible) who falls foul of the Romans in Antioch (under the Emperor Diocletian circa 300 AD). She is loved by Dydimus, but condemned to death by an otherwise sympathetic Roman officer Septimus, urged on by the far from sympathetic and vengeful fellow officer Valens, while her friend Irene can only look on in mounting horror as Theodora martyrs herself along with her devoted Dydimus.
It's a sad, forlorn tale, whatever one's religious beliefs. Christie and his trusty band Les Arts Florissants play and sing this glorious work with such a sense of its sublimity that mere words can barely convey its beauty.
Sophie Daneman is near-perfect in the title role, her sweetly mellifluous soprano a magical counterweight to the Irene of mezzo Juliette Galstian (a singer new to me) whose strong characterisation is one of this set's joys.
Counter-tenor Daniel Taylor sings Dydimus with exactly the right combination of fortitude and devoted ardour, while the Valens of Nathan Berg and Richard Croft's Septimus add the necessary uncompromising quality to their respective roles.
To hear Galstian sing As With Rosy Steps the Morn in Part One is to hear Handel art his melodic, sublime best, and it is sung soberly and memorably here by this superb mezzo. When we finally meet Theodora - almost half an hour into the oratorio - Daneman's much more obviously 'feminine' voice comes as a pleasing surprise after the sober Irene, macho posturings of Valens and Septimus, and vocal keenings of Dydimus.
Christie and his French group have never yet let me down, and this sounds to me like a jewel in their crown. It's a sublime work, given a reading that is as close to perfection as one could wish. The overall effect is that of a sacrament, for which we have both Handel and Christie to thank, not to mention his handful of wonderful singers, so obviously in tune with this reverent late masterpiece.

Heavenly.

Theodora unlike many other Handel oratorios has been very lucky on records. About 2 years ago Archiv released their own recording with The Gabrieli Consort and Paul McCreesh conducting and it was an excellent performance. It would have been hard to believe that any other recording could better it anytime soon, but as it happens, William Christie was the man to do the job.
His experience performing it in in Glyndebourne and elsewhere shows at every turn, his vision of the story is far more dramatic and taut than McCreesh's, and no less surprising, more beautiful too. His incomparable chorus and orchestra cover themselves with glory, and Erato's marvelous sound is better defined and warmer than Archiv's.
Both teams of soloists are even, both are extremely good, though it is a pity that David Daniels didn't appear in any set, his Dydimus at Glyndebourne was one of best things he has ever done.
Whatever you do don't miss Theodora a superb masterpiece, and if you are in doubt I bet you won't regret buying Christie's.
