Is this a big-tent revival? A funky throwdown? A jam-band juggernaut? Unclassified is all that, and so much more. The story of Robert Randolph is Hollywood-issue: kid from the gritty Jersey streets is saved from the bad life by playing steel guitar in a House of God Church. Of course, it wouldn't mean a thing if the guy couldn't play, but he can really tear it up. By updating the sacred-steel tradition with heavy doses of blues, funk, and rock, he's not only emerged with his own sound, but he's brought the music full circle, returning those pop-music styles to their gospel roots. The disc reaches some terrific heights from the very start with a fiery trio of opening songs: "Going in the Right Direction," "I Need More Love," and "Nobody" are joyous, uplifting romps brimming with the fervor of gospel music. Four instrumentals show the breadth of the sound, from the country-tinged "Squeeze" to the modal and slightly spaced-out "Calypso" to the scorching gospel-infused closer "Run for Your Life." A couple of the slower tunes impede the album's momentum, but at its best Unclassified comes awfully close to capturing the intensity of the Family Band's live shows--which is no small feat indeed. --Marc Greilsamer

ﾋﾟｰﾀｰﾊﾞﾗｶﾝさんのﾗｼﾞｵで紹介されているのを聴いて、購入しました。
全体的にﾋﾞｼﾊﾞｼとﾌﾗｯﾌﾟ（ﾁｮｯﾊﾟｰ）で弾くﾍﾞｰｽの音に乗っかってますが、それがとても気持ちの良い1枚です。
ﾛﾊﾞｰﾄﾗﾝﾄﾞﾙﾌのほかの作品は知りませんが、個人的には、これは買いの1枚かな。
元気がでるよ。

MTVでかかっていた「I Need More Love」を聴いて購入しました。こうも頭を殴られるような登場の仕方をしたのは私的にはストーンズ以来です。
ペダル･スティールというどちらかというとカントリーの楽器というイメージのある楽器を使いながらめっちゃファンキー！
歌ものだけでなくインストモノもあるのですが冗長にならずに1枚丸ごと踊りっぱなしな名盤です。

ライヴ・デビュー作「Live At The Wetlands」に続く、彼らにとって初のスタジオ録音アルバム。ジャム・バンドというと、1曲1曲が長いものが多いが、このアルバムの収録曲は意外にも皆、コンパクトにまとめられている。そして何よりも曲が最高にポップなので、ジャム・バンド好きでなくとも十分楽しめる。ただし全11曲中、4曲がインストなので、インストものに抵抗がない方にオススメしたい。僕はインストものにやられたクチですが（笑）　特に「Squeeze」「Good Times」「Run For Your Life」の凄まじい演奏、グルーヴ感は圧巻。ロバート・ランドルフによる凄絶なペダル・スティール・ギター・プレイばかりに注目が集まりがちですが、他のメンバーによる（特にリズム隊）によるタイトでアグレッシヴな演奏も特筆モノ。ジャム・バンド・ファンのみならず、ファンク、ソウル、R&B、ロックンロール等のファンにも自身をもってオススメできる傑作アルバムの誕生です。買おうかどうしようか迷っている方は、一度彼らのオフィシャル・サイトを訪れてみることをオススメします。このアルバムの曲を高音質で試聴できるほか、凄絶なライヴ映像（コレが本当に凄い！）を見ることができます。見たら必ず買いたくなること請け合いです。Phishの新作「ラウンド・ルーム」がイマイチ気に入らなかった方、今重要なのはこのアルバムを聴くことです（笑）
迷うことなく★5つ。
2003年の音楽シーンをを代表する最強の1枚。

新作の「Colorblind」で、すっかりRobert Randolphのサウンドに魅了されたが、この作品も素晴らしい。
とにかく聴いていて体を動かすなというのが無理なぐらい、ご機嫌なファンク・サウンドである。勿論、ブルース、ロックの要素も入っているので音楽性は非常に幅広いものを感じさせてくれる。ヴォーカルもスティービー・ワンダー風でもあり、こちらもなかなか聴かせてくれる。ペダルスティール・ギターの概念を破壊する彼らの音楽は、これからも要注意と言えるのではないだろうか。

スタジオアルバムではあるが、そのダイナミックでぐいぐい引っ張っていくスティール・ギターは十分に堪能できる。
これが本当に気持ち良い。
ゴスペル～ブルースがベースになるんだろうけど、おおらかで祝祭的な雰囲気も楽しく、何と言っても演奏が圧巻。ペダル・スチールのイメージが変わります。
激しくグルーヴ感たっぷりで、生命力に溢れる音は、是非とも多くの人に聞いて欲しいです。

Robert Randolphのセカンド。
1stはジャムバンドのライブ盤らしい尺長の演奏で聴く人間を選ぶ作品だったが、本作はスタジオ盤ならではの比較的コンパクトな作り、適度に丁寧なスタジオアレンジで幅広いファン層にもアピールしやすい作り。
実際リリース後人気も定着しつつあり、日本でも通好みの層から高い評価を受けているバンド。
ジャズフュージョン・ソウル・ファンク・ブルースごった煮、グルーブ重視の馬鹿テク軍団。
セイクリッド・スティールとして扱うRandolphの珍しさから注目されているが、それ以上でもそれ以下でもないとうのが正直な感想。

とてつもなくエネルギッシュな奴が登場していた～。というのが実感です。
良い意味で荒削りなところが現在での最大の魅力だと思います。
曲作りは、そこそこバリエーションがあるため、聞いていて飽きません。
一瞬、StevieWonderを思わせる声に聞こえますがVocalも魅力があります
(漠然と聞いているとduetの相方と区別がつきにくいですが)。
PedalSteelという特殊な楽器ですが、SlideGuitarと似て非なるもので、
良い意味での正確さに加え荒々しさが効果バツグンです。
元気になりたいときに聞く音楽です。

I'm an old guy (56). I depise anything new. Change at my age (?), I don't think so...and then came Robert Randolph! Because I try to stay clear of new music, Christian music and any form of soul, rap or hip-hop I had no idea who this young man was?

I do know a fella by the name of Eric Clapton. When I got wind Eric was having a concert for his charity called "Crossroads Guitar Festival", I wanted to go. Alas, it wasn't possible but I bought the DVD. Each and every guitar player on that stage was hand picked and invited by Eric because he enjoyed THEIR music. All of the living blues legends were there. Other artists like a country guy, then James Taylor with the help of Joe Walsh to help pull his portion out and more players I wasn't endeared to. Then Robert, hidden on side stage played with those blues masters on a pedal steel guitar. Now I was never a country lover, I've been a singer/harp player since 1965. I'll even admit to performing with a country band just long enough to steal their lead guitar player. Steel guitars are supposed to whine like my harps, aren't they? Now here's this kid playin' with Robert Cray, Jimmy Vaughn and Buddy Guy! The concert was fantastic but only one player got me to come to Amazon to buy. That would be Robert Randolph. His style reminded be of Brother Duane Allman.

Unclassified is good work as is "Live at the Wetlands" but I am patiently waiting for a CD/DVD dedicated to the BLUES.

After seeing Randolph and the Family Band on the last night of Clapton's tour in the Royal Albert Hall I had to buy this CD to see if the studio versions were as good as the live ones. Never the same but certainly not disappointed, this is a great album. An ecclectic mix of gospel, blues, funk, soul, jazz and the kitchen sink thrown in for good measure. Is he the next Hendrix? Well, boy can this guy play, I mean really play. The vocals and lyrics are strong and his cousin's voice (the bass player) sounds like it should come from a beehived 1960's female singer, not a huge 6ft plus man; tuneful, soulful and sounding perfect for the riffs and bass lines drifting past your ears. My 15 year old son thinks this is great also, not many bands can bridge the age gap today. Put it on, play it LOUD!
