唯一のインスト・アルバムで、幾つかの野心作の一つ。ピアノ（！）、驚いた。

バートの全キャリア中、私がもっとも好きな作品です。バートは自身のことをギタリストよりもシンガーだと認識していたと、どこかで聞いた覚えがあります。ですので、この全曲インスト作品をベストとすると、バートに渋い顔をされそうですが、トラッド、ロック、ジャズ etc が渾然一体となった珠玉の名曲ばかり。スリルと哀歓に満ちた捨て曲なしの傑作アルバムだと思います。

７９年発表の１２作目。約１８分の大作となるタイトル曲が異彩を放つ作品で、前作のトラッド／フォーク回帰路線を更に掘り下げたような印象を受ける。バックはペンタングル時代の同僚ダニー・トンプソン(b) とマーティン・ジェイキンス(mandocello、vln、fl) の２人のみというう極めて簡素なものとなっている。楽曲は１曲（５．）を先のジェイキンスが手掛けた他は先の大作を含めて彼のオリジナルとなっている。
１．は導入部からして素晴らしい。アコベとアコギによる木の温もりを感じさせる暖かいサウンド。そこにしばらくするとヴァイオリンが加わってくる。まるで朝日を浴びているかのような清々しさを感じさせる演奏である。曲はメドレーのようにアコースティックなジャズ・ロック風の演奏に変化する。アコベとアコギのサウンドは変わらないが、ヴァイオリンにはエフェクトが掛かっており演奏は更に滑らかに滑っていく・・・。曲は様々なモチーフをメドレーのように繋いだ形式となっており、引き延ばして大作にしたようなものではない。万華鏡のように曲が切り替わる瞬間が秀逸でおそらくは３人による一発録音ではないか？と思う。にも関わらず非常に豊かで濃厚なサウンドを生み出しており、変化のある曲構成、そして曲そのものの魅力を引いても聞き応えは十二分にある。ヴァイオリン、そして途中から代わりに入ってくるフルートなどのサウンドは上物として重要だが、さすがはペンタングル時代の同僚の２人、このギターとベースの絡みはそれだけで神掛かりである。ペンタングルも素晴らしいバンドだったが、そのマッチングの良さではその時代を遥かに越えた演奏と言って良いと思う。曲そのものはわかりやすく表現すればたった３人で初期マイク・オールドフィールドのような大作を作ったという感じだが、同じトラッドをベースにしつつもその質感はかなり異なり、違った意味で親しみやすい仕上がりを見せている。プログレ的な演奏／曲では決してないが、極めて魅力が高いので、様々な意味で押さえたい一曲ではないかと思う。長い曲だが、あっという間に終わってしまう印象である。２．はクラシカルなピアノによる小品。３．はアコベ、ギター、そして更にエフェクティヴなヴァイオリンによるジャズ・ワルツで中盤のアコベのソロは聞き物。かなり即効的な要素が強いが、ベースのサウンドをここぞとばかりに聞かせており、非常にマニアックに楽しめる。
前作がヴォーカル作で、本作はインスト作となっているが、彼のインスト作の中でも最も聞き応えのある作品の一つだと断言出来る名盤である。シンプルな形態な故に各楽器のレンジが広くサウンドの豊かさがケタ違いである。曲も本当に素晴らしいものばかりだが、このアコベとギターの絡みの美しさだけで何も見えなくなるほどである。もちろんヴァイオリンやフルートも素晴らしいのだが、むしろそれが消えた余韻の中の方に光が見える気がする。

Avocetは78年デンマーク版がオリジナルのようです。デンマーク版は一派の鳥の写実的なイラストで、名義はBert Jansch & Martin Jenkinsとなっています。その後発売されたUKオリジナル（79年）、今回の40th版とはジャケが全く違います。デンマーク版は実に美しいジャケットです。UKオリジナル（79年）は複数の鳥にバートの写真がはめ込まれた、私には明らかな劣化版に見えます。次回の再発ではデンマーク版の体裁での紙ジャケ再発を望みます。内容は間違いなく５スタープラス、ジャケでマイナス１です。

First released in 1979, this is the twelfth solo album from the inestimable Bert Jansch. It has been said that it was his favourite, and I would guess that it also the favourite of many of his fans.

By the time this was recorded Jansch already had an impressive body of work behind him, from the folk rock of his Pentangle albums, his blues influenced early solo work and his more recent West coast influenced material. It was all invariably excellent stuff, but this album, for me, stands head and shoulders above the rest.

For the first time this is a solely instrumental album, concentrating on Jansch’s celebrated guitar work, uninhibited and undistracted by vocalisations. There are six tracks, each named after a sea or wading bird. Each track is a musical vignette that suits the temperament and personality of each bird to a tee. The masterpiece is the 17 minute opening track, Avocet. It’s a work of genius, never descending into mindless guitar twiddling (a la the contemporary prog genre) but with a clear musical vision and sense of purpose. Complex and enthralling music gushes forth from Jansch’s guitar, falling from the strings like a waterfall, with eddying currents that swirl along, taking you up and carrying down a musical river, depositing you refreshed and enlightened on the far bank.

People often characterise this, and Jansch, as purely folk, but the album and the artist are so much more than that. Yes, it has it’s roots in British folk, but there is a lot more mixed in to make up a musical smorgasbord of styles. I can’t even begin to comprehend how difficult this stuff must have been to play, it’s a real tour de force.

There were three people involved in the recording, Jansch on guitar and piano, Danny Thompson on bass and Martin Jenkins on the wonderfully named mandocello, flute and violin. It’s Jansch’s show, but the other two do a marvellous job of supporting him, and all three work together well, knowing instinctively what is required at any given moment. There is not a note out of place, I think that this is a perfect recording.

This release is pretty plain with a decent mastering that gives good clarity. There is no bonus material as with the re-releases of Jansch’s Charisma albums. No problems though, this is a masterpiece that needs no embellishment. 5 stars unreservedly.

God bless Castle Music for *finally* bringing this wondrous album out as a CD, just as only He knows why it took so long for this 1979 tour de force to appear.
I actually had an early pressing handed to me by the Chrysalis label's stalwarts in Soho's Nellie Dean pub and Bert's honoured scrawling in return for a round of Newcastle Browns and Tony S-S's usual gigantic gin.
I carried it with me for 15 years, finally leaving it in a Hong Kong fishing village with the most literate karateka it's been my nervous pleasure to befriend.
It's highly unusual Bert and utterly typical: not a single leathery vocal, just exquisite guitar with Martin Jenkins' fiddle and the incomparable Danny Thompson on bass.
Colin Harper's sleevenotes are among the best I've read and the feast of photos and Janschiana just run the cup over.
Six tracks: Avocet, Lapwing, Bittern, Kingfisher, Osprey, and Kittiwake (a cliff-nesting gull).
No greater or more convincing courtesy can there be than to keep ones own inadequate blatherings short and simply hail this jewel (of which many copies have been bought for friends' ecstatic delight) as a crucial piece in the Jansch jigsaw puzzle. Buy it.

I heard a track off this Album which I liked and Bert used to play with Pentangle who had some success in the charts. I bought it on the strength of that but as I am a rock fan this was a little too tame for me. If you are a folk fan this is one of his best albums but sadly not for me
