This beautiful duo album from 1988 was, sadly, Gil Evans` last recording.
Soprano saxophonist Steve Lacy rated this album very highly and placed it among the most favourite recordings of his career; Evans and Lacy were old friends and colleagues – Lacy crediting Evans with giving him one of his most treasured and helpful experiences by taking him into his band and featuring him on the “Gil Evans and Ten“ album from 1957.
The duo are well-matched and gently spark ideas off one another as they play through a programme that features three Mingus compositions, “Paris Blues” by Ellington and one composition each; “Jelly Roll “ by Evans and “Esteem” by Lacy, which gets two interpretations, with Evans entering into Lacy`s world of texture, timbre, unusual intervals and note-spacing. Both masters bring an air of meditative, intellectual enquiry to the material, with Evans exploiting both the colours of the acoustic piano and the nocturnal, often otherworldly qualities of the electric piano.
It's a shame that Evans didn't make more recordings as intimate as this, his keyboard playing is sensitive, exploratory and quite a revelation outwith the usual context of his larger ensemble work.
The CD runs to just over 59 mins. Check out the sound samples or visit the MP3 download page.
A great album and one to savour and enjoy.

A haunting duo album from Gil Evans & Steve Lacy in 1987
Gil Evans(acoustic & electric piano) & Steve Lacy(soprano sax) complement one another beautifully on this duo album recorded for OWL in Paris on November 30/December 1, 1987.
The seven memorable tracks include inventive versions of three Charles Mingus compositions, one each from Duke Ellington & Gil Evans and two takes of Steve Lacy's 'Esteem'.
Steve Lacy has described this CD as "a sketch or model of a work-in-progress" and the haunting, reflective 60 minutes of music on the little-known 'Paris Blues' is well worth searching for.
