Als Fan von Lon Chaney muß man hier zuschlagen, denn als absolut genialer Bonus liegt dieser Box die Rekonstruktion des verschollenen Klassikers LONDON AFTER MIDNIGHT bei. Als musikuntermalte Bildershow kann man sich ein Bild vom wirklichen Film machen. Das funktioniert unglaublich gut. Ich hatte irgendwie in einer limitierten Art und Weisse das Gefühl LAM gesehen zu haben.
Aber auch die 3 weiteren Klassker um vor allem LAUGH, CLOWN, LAUGH sind gelungen. Zuschlagen!!!

Die Box enthält mit "Laugh, Clown, Laugh" und "The Unknown" zwei große Klassiker aus der Stummfilmzeit, in denen Lon Chaney brilliert. Dazu kommt "The Ace of Hearts", der nicht ganz so bekannt, aber durchaus sehenswert ist.

Wertvoll ist die Rekonstruktion von "London after Midnight", des am meisten gesuchten verschollenen Films Chaneys, anhand von Standbildern vom Set und Zwischentiteln: ein schöner Versuch, den Film näherzubringen; insbesondere die Aufnahmen Chaneys als Vampir mit Haifischgebiss sind ungemein originell und einprägsam. Tod Browning hat die Handlung nochmals verfilmt in "Mark of the Vampire". Daran mag man sich orientieren.

Das Ganze wird durch eine Dokumentation "Lon Chaney: A Thousand Faces" sehr gut abgerundet. Hier kommen Zeitgenossen zu Wort, die die große Zeit des wohl besten Filmschauspielers erlebt haben. Chaney war ein wandelnder Spezialeffekt. Der Running Gag bei Dreharbeiten ist wohl bekannt, mag aber nochmals zitiert werden:
"Tritt nicht drauf, es könnte Lon Chaney sein." Joan Crawford hat über Chaney gesagt, er habe ihr die Schauspielerei erst beigebracht, dies eben auch in dem gemeinsamen Film "The Unknown", in dem Chaney seine Liebe zum Bizarren so richtig auslebt.

Kurzum: Diese Box ist ein cineastischer Leckerbissen und ein einziger Genuss!

Roll up roll up roll up' see if you dare
the amazing man of a thousand faces
- a broken hearted clown, a sinister
anachist, a vampire with shark like
teeth, an armless wonder, thats all
Lon Chaney the greatest.
He's more the an actor he's a magician too, savor each movie like
a fine wine. Laugh Clown Laugh -
with Loretta Young is my runaway
favorite, watch Chaney do his shadow
puppetry and his daring upside
down tightrope act its mesmerizing'
Chaney's preformance burns into
the memory and makes us laugh
and breaks are heart with sadness.
The Ace Of Hearts. - not a great
part for Chaney but a good movie
and Chaney is very simpathetic as
the well meaning anachist trying
to build utopia.
London After Midnight - this is
a lost film, the last remaining print
was destroyed in 1960' it's not
a great film and only some mouth
watering stills pump up it's reputation but Chaney's vampire
make up is exquisite, the plot was
used again with Lugosi in 1935,
The Mark Of The Vampire'.
The Unkown - this is a must see
movie and Chaney's perfomance
is spellbinding and this movie is
noteworthy for an early appearance
from Joan Crawford. A delightful
dvd, miss it at your peril.
