Today痴 audiences often find it difficult to comprehend what makes Vincenzo Bellini痴 operas remarkable. Works like Beatrice di Tenda were not rediscovered and staged until the second half of the 20th century. Bellini's credo was, "I want to move to tears�.". This sympathetic treatment of the text led his contemporaries to describe Bellini痴 music as 素ilosofica�. Even Richard Wagner acknowledged this when he said, "Bellini痴 music comes from the heart and closely follows the text". The premiere of the opera was given at the Teatro la Fenice in Venice on 16 March 1873 and was an abysmal failure. Shouts of "Norma! Norma!" were heard from the gallery, which was a clear indication that the audience missed the belcanto style in Beatrice di Tenda. In his new opera Bellini did not continue, as he did in Norma, with the virtuosity and coloratura artistry of the voices but explored a new way of musical expression, which brought to the fore a new warmth and different characteristics. Although Beatrice di Tenda is not one of Bellini痴 most successful operas, the title role is a popular showpiece among sopranos. Special features include an interview with Marcello Viotti.

The story involves a Duke, his wife, the Dukes love for another woman and the other woman's desire for someone else, throw in jealousy for power and a tissue of lies about unfaithfullness and you have the basic plot. Even the booklet while giving background to the story and composer throws little light on the plot.Fear not, does a nice wikipedia precis of the story if you so desire.
The characters are Filippo, the Duke excellently presented by Michael Volle, Beatrice, his Duchess, sung by Edita Gruberova at her best, Agnese, Beatrice Lady in Waiting, Stefania Kaluza, loved by Filippo, but in love with Orombello, a young nobleman sung by Raul Hernandez.
An ex Minister Anichino, Miroslav Christoff and friend of Orombello, and last Rizzardo, Boguslaw Bidzinski, brother of Agnese and Filippo's confidant.
The above named are all in very good voice and present their characters well, though Raul Hernandez, whilst singing brilliantly manages to look a bit wooden.
The original story was medieval, this updates very successfully to 1930ish, and contrary to my normal preferences for original settings, I like this transposition, it reflects story nicely.
The revolving stage is utilised to give a number of aspects to a single set, with platforms and steps to an upper level, the effects are art deco-ish and catch the eye.
Mens costumes are dinner suits, black and white and very smart. the ladies wear evening dresses, tastefully done.
The orchestra is in balance with the singers, the music being descriptive and complementary to the plot, very musical and pleasing to the ear.
There are many pleasing combinations of voices in duets, trios, quartets and more, some with the excellent chorus involved as well. Watch out for "ah, tal onto io meritai" at the end of act one, involving all the soloists and chorus, this is a real highlight.
This is currently my favourite Bellini, it has more depth musically, at least to my ear than Norma, Sonambula and Puritani etc. It surprises me that it
seems to have been relatively neglected.
Thoroughly recommended, add to your collection and enjoy.

The Modern Dress version came as a bit of a shock, though if I had magnified the image I might have known. As usual, however, the sound quality is excellent, and Gruberova is ..... well, Gruberova. Perhaps it deserves more stars if you don't watch or worry about the pictures.
