This is a fabulous 1982 concert of the great and versatile NRBQ doing what they do best...playing rambunctuous, upbeat music. This is different from their other live recordings because;
1) the song selection is diverse and
2) they back John Sebastion as he sings some of the most noted Lovin Spoonful songs. NRBQ and Loving Spoonful is a natural pairing since the different styles still have the common denominator of whimsical subject matter.
NRBQ plays very accessible pop music but, at the same time, they apply as much eccentrism as possible. It's hardly self indulgent, it's just that these guys love some many different styles and they do not impose perimeters on what they would perform. That means that they do the Al Hirt jazz standard "Java" with as much ease as Alvin and the Chipmunk's "Things we like to do" or Mel Torme's "The Christmas song". They mix a smooth version of "My Girl" with their usual aggressive approach to "Shake, Rattle and Roll" . "Don't she look good", "Wacky Tobacky", "Never take the place fo you" and "Thats neat, that's nice" are NRBQ penned concert staples.
NRBQ then backs John Sebastion for five songs and plays Lovin Spoonful tunes. They actually sound better than the originals since you get an added dose of NRBQ's muscular musicianship and their playful harmonizing.
This is a fun and worthwhile purchase because it has different songs from the other live NRBQ works and you have the unique coupling of another famous artist. The sound quality is very good as well
