ライブでよくこれだけのテンションを保って演奏できるな~と感心してしまいます。サットンのギターの音量がもう少しあるといいけど、フィドルとマンドリンがあまりにも凄すぎて・・。

Mark O'Connor on Violin

Chris Thile on Mandolin

Bryan Sutton on Guitar

Byron House on Doublebass

...revealed in part over the last few years, from when my son liked a girl who played banjo, listened to the Flecktones, and, fatefully, told me "He plays bluegrass sometimes, too."

Since then I've slowly uncovered the wonders of this music, inadequately described as 'newgrass' or 'bluegrass/jazz/classical fusion'...from Fleck to Meyer to Douglass, Barenberg, Bush, Marshall, Tim O'Brien and Chris Thile and on and on and somehow I'd failed to notice just how amazing Bryan Sutton is, and missed Mark O'Connor completely!

So this CD was not only a revelation (and a TERRRIFIC deal! One reviewer's estimate of 'a million notes' is probably high, but more better notes are not to be had from any single purchase of music I can imagine!) of this new music, but of O'Connor's germinal position in the development of it. And I maintain this IS a form of classical music. However dissimilar it is to what has gone before, this is American Chamber Music...a few stringed instruments, played by virtuoso musicians, and limited only by the musical inventiveness of the composer.

30 years of O'Connor's musical inventiveness is on display here, with musicians who can play anything he can invent. Sutton is amazing, doing everything perfectly...rhythm, harmonic counterpoint and jaw-dropping leads...and when I say 'jaw-dropping', I mean Tony Rice's jaw. He is as good on guitar as Jerry Douglas is on dobro, or Thile on Mandolin...or, now that I think of it, O'Connor on fiddle. And I can't really think of higher praise for his playing than that.

This double CD contains more than just a ridiculous quantity of sublime musical excellence, the variety of the pieces is remarkable as well...from the good taste shown in leaving "Mark's Waltz" as a sad, sweet, pure and unadorned fiddle tune, to the joyous blaze of the alternating guitar/mandolin leads in "Granny White Special" (I'd have been removed from the concert for irresistable "whooping", I'm afraid), to the red hot swing tunes and classical-oriented pieces like "Stone From Which the Arch Was Made" and classical/Americana like "Johnny Appleseed" this is never boring, there's something new around every corner.

Thile is magic, as always, Sutton is a revelation, and O'Connor's fiddle soars ecstatic, goes cool and jazzy, turns into a violin, becomes rich and expressive, then takes off on red hot, I-can-play-ANYTHING solos...as a composer, it must be like having Vassar Clements, Stephan Grapelli and Itzak Perlman available to play your stuff. Quite the luxury.

You can't beat this: unimaginably skilled musicians at the top of their game, and the game is one they are inventing as they go along. Perfect.

As noted in the liner notes and elsewhere, this was recorded "live" from microphones set up at an "unamplified" concert at Vanderbilt University in Nashville. In other words, the mics were set up to record, but what the audience at these concerts heard was "live" and TOTALLY "unplugged". As Mark notes himself in his liner notes, the crowd was very respectfully quiet - no coughing, sneezing, crinkling of papers, etc.
My brother and I live 3 states apart and deliberately bought this 2 CD set separately, determined to "make up our own minds". After listening separately, we got back together to "compare notes". We were both in agreement: This crowd had more self-restraint than a Bishop, because there were SEVERAL times when we were agreed that it would have been nigh impossible to hold back a loud and appreciative hoop or holler.
This music is magical. The slower-tempo tunes like "Midnight Interlude" are absolutely SOARING in their tone and melody, and the more up-tempo things remind me of a Slam Dunk contest I watched a few years ago between Dominique Wilkins and Michael Jordan. THAT crowd (at Jordan's "home" Chicago stadium) went absolutely crazy as Jordan and Wilkins dunked in ever-escalating versions of "can you top this"? My cap is off to this respectful Vanderbilt crowd.
Will there be more recordings like this? We can only hope. The TRUTH is that Mr. O'Connor COULD have recorded an album like this years ago with.... say.... Bela Fleck, Jerry Douglas, Tony Rice, Sam Bush, etc. But the truth is also that Mark's musical genius was somewhat unrealized on these particular compositions while he lacked musical partners who could keep up with him(with only a couple of exceptions these are all Mark O'Connor tunes). This is that fantasy album - the one where Mark O'Connor fiddles as good as he can, yet is matched in his virtuosity by Sutton on guitar and Thile on mandolin. Byron House is a completely logical choice to anchor this quartet on bass.
Mr. O'Connor is the "old man" among this group in his early 40s - I pray these musical magicians thrill us for ages.

Let me just start off by saying that of the many CDs I've added to my bluegrass/newgrass collection over the past few years, this is the first one that moved me so much that I had to write a review! Oddly enough, I wasn't at all familiar with Mr. O'Connor's work when I purchased this CD - I pretty much just saw the words "Chris Thile" and that was enough for me! However, it didn't take more than one listen for me to add Mark O'Connor to my list of favorite musicians in this genre. I was absolutely blown away by the intricacies of the solos and the wide range of sounds on this CD. From more traditional sounding bluegrass numbers to bluesy/jazzy swing numbers to classical sounding pieces, there is never a dull moment. The timing of the musicians is dead on - at times they are so in synch with one another that it's scary to imagine there are actually 8 hands in perfect coordination with one another. I've basically been listening to it every few days for months now, and there is so much going on musically in each song that every time you listen you can focus on new layers to the music that you haven't noticed yet. The only drawback from purchasing this CD is the lightening of my wallet as I set out to purchase the solo projects from each of the 4 musicians featured here!

I bought this album many years ago, and I'm still waiting for someone to come along and top it, not that brilliant music is a competition. Goat Rodeo Sessions was good, but it lacked a lifetime virtuoso's library of music to preform. This is Mark O'Connor at his best, Chris Thile when he was a little less strange but just as technically awesome, Bryan Sutton as lightning fast as he's always been and Byron House keeping them all together. It's an absolutely sublime album, as all 18 5-star reviews before me can tell you, just by their titles. I'm actually glad I waited awhile to review it, because the thrill hasn't worn off but been enhanced over the few hundred times I've listened to it. The track list is a wonderful journey, best enjoyed when you have a road trip or a long time to listen, undisturbed.
I wish someone could recommend me another this good to check out! I love all Mark's other work, but this seems to be one of those albums from the 'Glory Days' which may never be equalled.
