ヨットで海に繰り出した7人の若い男女（久保明、水野久美、小泉博、佐原健二など）が遭難し、無人島に漂着。そこには不気味なキノコ以外に食料はまったくなく、やがてそれを食べた者はキノコ人間＝マタンゴと化していく。
本多猪四郎監督＆円谷英二特技監督の東宝特撮黄金コンビが、星新一と福島正実の原案を基に「飢えて死ぬか？ キノコを食べて化け物となるか？」という究極の選択を通して、人間の心の弱さや醜さなどを浮き彫りにしていくホラー映画の秀作。特に明るい作風の印象が強い本多作品としては異色中の異色とも言え、まるで彼のダークサイドをのぞき見しているかのような驚異感にも満ちあふれている。極彩色のキノコの森やマタンゴの造形など、美術も見事。ラストのオチまで息つく間もないほどスリリングな映画体験の粋がここにある。（的田也寸志）

監督は「ゴジラ」シリーズで有名な本多猪四郎氏と特技監督として円谷プロダクションの初代社長であり、特撮の神様と云われる円谷英二氏。この映画は1963年公開の作品なのでテレビ特撮番組の「ウルトラＱ」や「ウルトラマン」等がまだ放映される前の時代である。私は「ウルトラＱ」の頃からリアルタイムで見ていた世代の人間だが、この60年前の古い映画は今の若い人達が見ても面白いのではと思う。当時としての特撮技術も良く出来ていると思うが。劇中で歌手の関口麻美役で出演している水野久美さんが綺麗ですね、今でも現役で現在85歳ですけど、近年では高畑充希主演のドラマ「にじいろカルテ」で元小学校教師のおばあちゃん役で出演していた。マタンゴの被り物で素顔は見られないが演じているのは後の特撮ヒーロー物で一大変身ブームを巻き起こした初代「仮面ライダー」で死神博士を演じた天本英世氏である。序盤で男女７人が乗るセーリングヨットが劇中の会話で4000万円と言っていたが現在の価値に換算すると幾らぐらいの金額になるか気になった。因みに当時の1963年型トヨペット・クラウン1900デラックスの新車価格は105万円なのを考えると約４～５倍の価値換算になるのか？、船舶の場合は良く分からんが一般庶民に手の届く価格で無い事は確かで、今風に云うと勝ち組か、上級国民のボンボンか？(笑)。本編映像は90分＋特典映像が47分で特典も良かった。映像はシネマスコープサイズだ。

この作品を最初に観た子供の頃はただただ怖く感じていましたが年月を経て観てみると実は人間のエゴと葛藤を描いた良質なホラー映画だった事に気づきます。初代ゴジラにせよこのマタンゴにせよ当時の東宝怪獣怪人映画はその根底に原水爆の恐ろしさを描いていたのではないでしょうか。マタンゴの原子雲のようなデザインにもそんな事を感じました。

小学校低学年の頃からずっと見たくてアタマから離れなかった
"マタンゴ"！VHS時代になって念願叶って鑑賞したときは
歳の所為か震え上がることも無かったけれど
原案に当たるホジスン『夜の声』とか読んでから見てみると
作品全体を覆う独特なムードがなんともいえない。
ふッと仕様をBlu-rayと比較してみると
コチラにない"映像特典"に気になるタイトルが・・・。
買おうかどうか検討中です。

怖くて夢でうなされました。
私にとって本当の恐怖映画は本作品と「マックイーンの絶対の危機」が双璧です。
ということで、★5です。
今、観れば、どうということの無い作品かもしれません。
トラウマを消すために両作品ともに見直そうかと思っています。

This paen to Mycophobia is hilarious. A social spectrum of early '60s cliched personalities (e.g.: The serious professor, the innocent wide-eyed young gal, the Glamorous, Female Media Mega-Star, the Diligent Mariner-Captain, the Flaky Lackey, the Flaky Writer, the Shallow, Selfish Millionaire) --very closely paralleling the personalities, in the early '60s sit-com "Gilligan's island"--get stuck on a mysterious Island, after a violent storm wrecks the Millionaire's yacht. There's next to nothing to eat, even Sea-birds avoid the place. Discovering a mysterious, wrecked, abandoned research vessel, our castaways discover that the prolific mushrooms, growing on the Island may be toxic--possibly due to radiation, or pollution--never specified, which...

Japanese society is, currently, so much more hip about & accepting of Fungi--they've discovered & used umpteen species--for both medicinal & culinary purposes & have cute names for all of them. So, it seems strange that the Japanese produced a horror-adventure movie, in which the "bad guys" are, um, Mushrooms--or rather Humans whose bodies are being taken over by the mycelia of--presumably--the titular species colloquially "Matango". Whatever, this movie's a hoot!!

Devo dire che ho iniziato il film con le migliori aspettative.
Sinceramente, però, in parte sono rimasto deluso.
Il film ha come temi principali l'isolamento, la pazzia e un nemico a tutti sconosciuto.
Non è un brutto film, anzi, è stato fatto nel 1963 ma lo reputo, a tratti, migliore di molte delle produzioni dell'epoca.
Forse l'unica vera pecca del film è una lentezza un po' soporifera e una recitazione non tra le migliori.
Nonostante tutto, il film è consigliato.
Per chi ama la fantascienza e l'horror di altri tempi, sicuramente è consigliato.
Consiglio la visione in lingua originale con sottotitoli in italiano.

"Matango" (also known as "Matango: Fungus of Terror", "Attack of the Mushroom People", and several other variations) is a truly innovative Toho horror movie from 1963 that's distinctive from the rest of their catalog. It is a more expensive film than many of its contemporaries (for more on this see the excellent commentary with cinematographer Teruyoshi Nakano), with excellent sets, generally very good acting, a great script, and fabulous photography and direction. If the film has any flaw, it would be that the pace is a bit plodding on occasion.

The premise of the film is that seven people from various walks of life are on a yacht, which is wrecked on a mysterious island. The survivors discover a prior shipwreck that is deserted and coated in fungus. The social fabric holding the seven together quickly rips and the survivors turn on each other, mostly out of hunger. Despite warning signs pointing out the dangers of eating the local mushrooms, one by one they succumb, and are filled with psychotropic fungi. These mushrooms are no ordinary life form, though (as the trailer makes quite clear they are a third, evil form of life; neither fauna nor flora), and they both mentally and physically change the humans slowly into demented mushroom people. This may sound like an ordinary run-of-the-mill ridiculous B-movie plot, but it's far creepier than that, particularly toward the end as the lone survivor is surrounded by the mushroom people. The film is interesting as it focuses not only on the battle between the survivors and the mushrooms, but places man's ugly self-centered survival instincts and the worst of human behavior front and center as well, making this much more of a psychological adventure than the typical Toho release. In a masterstroke, the film is done in flashback from the perspective of the lone survivor Kenji Murai (Akira Kubo) in his post-rescue Tokyo hospital room. The conclusion is not wholly unexpected, but is still stunning, attesting to Ishirô Honda's directorial genius.

I had seen "Matango" several times before, and enjoyed it, but I was much more fond of it this time, and found the DVD packaging to be truly superior and fully justifying a five star rating. Not only is the print nearly perfect with beautiful color, the extra features are wonderful. There is a great commentary from Akira Kubo, which not only comments on the factual information of how the film was made, but provides great personal insights into the intentions of Honda and special effects director Eiji Tsuburaya, and other more meaningful observations about the film. There is an excellent interview with special effects cinematographer Teruyoshi Nakano about the making of the movie, and the new processes that were involved (and why it cost so much money to make), and a surprisingly captivating monologue outlining the concept of the movie from writer Masami Fukushima set to a variety of still and motion photography. I expected this to be a somewhat boring recap, but truly enjoyed having it explained through the writer's eyes. There's also a trailer and a choice of subtitles, and I enjoyed watching it in English with the English subtitles on: it was surprising how different the translations often were.

While this isn't a typical Toho monster movie, it's a great film, and I appreciate it much more as an adult than I did when I first saw it as a teenager. The movie is great on it's own, but the DVD package is a real treasure and I recommend it to fans of Toho, monster movies, the horror and suspense genres, or anyone else who wants to see an excellent combination of physical and psychological thriller from 1960's Japan.

The title alone is what made me want to see this movie. From TOHO, the people that brought you “Godzilla”. This unusual movie starts with a man in insane asylum telling his doctors a bazaar tale of being shipwrecked on a deserted island with six other passengers. Seven mostly entitled young people are sailing and having a good time. A storm comes up and damages their boat. They drift for a long time before they land on a strange fog encased island. The island itself seems to appear as if it is slowly decaying. In searching for food they find another boat that had been wrecked in a previous storm. The ship is covered with fungus. They find a journal that warns them about a mushroom called “Matango” that is poisonous. For a while they sustain themselves with meager food stuffs they scrounge up around the island. Suffering from starvation one by one the castaways eat the forbidden mushrooms. Once they begin to eat the mushrooms they slowly turn into giant mushroom people.

The pace of the movie is rather slow, however, the premise of the movie is so out of this world that you find yourself waiting to find out what happens next. You are dying to see these mushroom people. It’s actually quite a haunting little film. More psychological thriller than horror. A sort of doomsday movie on a desert island. The slowness is probably to add character development but all it did was make me want to see everybody a mushroom person. I really didn’t like any of them. Each one personifies there own deadly sin. Greed, Lust, Gluttony, Anger, Envy, Pride Sloth. For some even before it got to the point of survival of the fittest. If you don’t mind the pace it really is an amazing little film. A tale of seduction and addiction. There are monsters here. But they take their time.

There was one thing I noticed that was funny. When I started the movie I had English dubbed version running plus the English subtitles. They did not match. On screen someone would say “We found it and it’s first come first served around here.” Whereas the subtitle read “Finder’s keepers you know.” If you get bored with the beginning of the movie you might want to watch the English version with the English subtitles to keep you amused until you get to the creepy parts.

Cool to finally get this after seeing this very odd Toho production on late-night cable TV in the eighties. Not particularly scary, but weird and trippy. Part of the fun is guessing which of our victims corresponds to the cast of Gilligan's Island. Its original title was Matango The Fungus of Terror, but called Attack of the Mushroom People for the North American market. The bonus content adds to its history.
