I don't know why there are so many negative reviews of this album. First of all, anyone who criticizes this album because it's not all compositions by Gershwin should think about the title: Gershwin's World. That's right, it's all about exploring the musical world of and surrounding Gershwin. So if there's a James P Johnson song or a standard by a contemporary of Gershwin, or a takeoff on Ravel, a composer who obviously influenced Gershwin - it all makes perfect sense.
This a playful, exploratory album. Rather than a play it safe with a bunch of the usual suspects playing the usual Gershwin tunes that are thought of standards, Hancock is stretching out and taking chances here. Yet a few tunes such as Summertime and My Man's Gone are in there, and beautifully sung by Joni Mitchell. As for the lineup, it's pretty much a who's who of the elite in the jazz world. As for not swinging the whole way through, I applaud Herbie for once again taking chances with some intense string writing and uncharacteristic arrangements choices, such as choosing the great opera star Kathleen Battle to do a Vocalise. After all, Gershwin has traditionally been one the few crossover composers who opera stars have taken on. So is it really so strange?
As for the pacing, I disagree with many who say the album doesn't flow. I find it flows well from one song and mood to the next. The issue here is, this album isn't conventional in its pacing. It starts off slow (after the percussion intro, which is fantastic) for several songs, picking up the pace later in the album. Which is alright with this listener. Why do conventions have to get on the way of interesting artistic decisions?
As far as the audio goes, this may be the best multichannel recording in my entire collection of some 65 surround discs. It makes my so-so system sound much more expensive than it is. I can't emphasize how great this disc sounds. It is now truly the benchmark multichannel recording by which I measure all others. Yes, it really is that good.

Jazz piano master Herbie Hancock set out to mark the 100th anniversary of George Gershwin's birth with this excellent collection. The music comprises Gershwin's own works together with pieces that would have inspired him, from classical composer Ravel to stride piano legend James P Johnson.
Wayne Shorter, Chick Corea, James Carter and Kenny Garret all make contributions. But it is the prescence of Stevie Wonder and Joni Mitchell that really make this a special occasion.
Stevie's distinctive chromatic harmonica in particular is all over some of the best tracks. And Joni Mitchell comes over all chanteuse!
For me the highlights are Ravel's Concerto For Piano And Orchestra In G, Mitchell and Wonder's take on Summertime, and the funky version of WC Handy's St Louis Blues.
Well worth checking out.
