From the deep and understated rhythms and tones on their 1996 landmark MILLIONS NOW LIVING WILL NEVER DIE, to the bombastic rock of 2001s STADARDS, Tortoise have always been head of their time. This release finds the band doing what they do best; building upon melodies and rhythms with their own remarkable touch. Lush orchestrated tones, intricate melodies and densely elaborate rhythms make this their most thoughtful record to date.
Amazon
(Louis Pattison, Amazon.co.uk)

It's all around youのタイトル通り

My only criticism is that the drums on this album sound too mechanical, too "perfect" and not as lively as on previous albums. But not as bad as the drums on Beacons - which sounds more like "IDM" (Four Tet comes to mind) than Tortoise.
My favorite album by Tortoise will always be Millions Now Living Will Never Die, it was my first. TNT is arguably their best, but i still represent Millions even though I love TNT. Standards has some flaws but there's also some amazing work on it (Benway is especially slick). It's All Around You reminds me more of Standards and is arguably as good -maybe better- than Standards. Besides their self-titled album, Tortoise doesn't make mediocre albums. Maybe Beacons of Ancestorship. Beacons sounds more DAW-based and less lively to me - sounds artificial. The Catastrophist is great - but I absolutely loathe the ugly album cover.
I own almost everything Tortoise has done and absolutely love them but this is usually my 'go-to' album. I think they have shown more maturity in this album. Each song flows very well into the other and does so even better each time you listen. There are some bits that'll stick out like a sore thumb when you first listen - Like a choir made from voice samples... Then you listen again and again and you realise that it's perfection.
I'm buying and recommending this album to most of the people I know. It's my favorite album and I want everyone to give it a chance!
Like most fans, I started with "Millions Now Living Will Never Die", regarded as their magnum opus by most. I'm still new to this amazing band, with "It's All Around You" just my second album from them, and you can bet your booties I'll be getting everything by them in a short time as my musical budget allows.
What is most amazing is how the two albums are approached totally differently but still are unmistakably and utterly unique Tortoise. Where "Millions . . . " delved into electronica and sparse ethereal soundscapes, "It's All Around You" is a lush, incredibly beautiful and rich album.
There are elements of electronica here - it is Tortoise, after all, but the guitars are subtle and soothing, the bass deep and hypnotic and the melodies recall the most melodic moments of jazz while still distinctly modern. It's as though the world of jazz and other ethereal music was a deck of cards, and Tortoise were the ones to pick it up, throw it in the air and play "54 Card Pickup". The essential elements are there, but represented as only this band can do it.
To clarify this band as a jazz-pop group is to limit their description, but it's about as close as you can get. Instrumental music simply doesn't get better.
