私聞を書かせていただきます。 タイトルにも書きましたとおり、down in the villegeはタビー最高傑作のひとつだと個人的に思います。 中でも、most beautiful girl in the world / in the nightは最高に素晴らしい演奏です。
Just 27 years old, and already featured on thirty or so albums, here we encounter Tubby Hayes at his best playing live to an audience at Ronnie Scott's, the London Mecca of modern jazz. The atmosphere of this venue would bring out the very best in the musicians who performed there. Live concert recordings are for me always superior to the studio recordings. The musicians are not curtailed by time constraints in the same way. The music is more "organic" and depends on the rapport between musician and the audience.
The performance on the nights of 17 and 18th May 1962 is captured here for us to enjoy in perpetuity. TH shares time between saxophones and vibes (by no means his second instrument).
Renowned for playing a breakneck speed, Tubs gives us a good selection of mid paced tracks, with just three really up tempo numbers. Every track is special, but the title track "Down In The Village" takes my affection. A lengthy (11 min) mid tempo engaging tune on which TH plays vibes.
The other musicians are all superb and had distinguished careers. They are Jimmy Deuchar (t), Gordon Beck (p), Freddy Logan (b) and Allan Ganley (d).
This music was the very best of post bop modern jazz being played in Britain (in fact one might argue the World). On this album we are privileged to witness just sample of music being played live in London. It is much more than a historic record, but it is that. However the music is just as enjoyable fifty years on. For those my age it brings back wonderful memories, for younger people this is what you (regrettably) missed!
A genuine 5star performance by five great young men full of optimism for the future.
