Ensemble Modern were the group responsible for the realization of Frank’s Yellow Shark album, which ended up being his last release before he passed away in 1993. These brilliant musicians actually contacted Frank with a desire to perform his music live. Anyone familiar with Zappa’s compositions will completely understand what a herculean prospect this would have been. But not only were they already familiar with his music, after only a few rehearsals Frank discovered they were the ideal group for the task at hand.
This particular recording was made after Frank had passed, and sanctioned by the Zappa Family Trust. This release provides some incredible performances of some of Zappa’s more complex compositions. And concludes with an epic 25 minute version of The Adventure’s of Greggery Peccary.
These gifted musicians are more than capable of playing these challenging pieces with precision and passion. Anyone familiar with these songs will find this album extremely entertaining, and mind blowing. The attention to detail here is truly remarkable, and the genuine respect for the material is really heartwarming.
Ensemble Modern have put together a collection of performances that not only honor the composer, but honor the fans as well. I found the listing experience to be impressive, and emotional. Well worth the price of admission for anyone who loves Zappa’s music, and a great addition to the collection.
