Gotye's sound is a melting pot of samples from sources far and wide, mixed with wally's home recorded sounds to form original songs that are as much influenced by the '80's British electro of depeche mode and mock-lounge pop of roxy music, as the scratchy sounds of old noir soundtracks and majestic orchestras of luminaries john barry and henry mancini. The cut'n'paste approach of hip-hop djs figures prominently in the arrangements, inspired especially by the musicality of San Francisco's finest sample-composers, DJ shadow and Cut Chemist. The results are songs that both reference and incorporate styles and sounds of the past, while showcasing wally's unique songwriting in a broad web of sonic environments.

Gotye is definitely great musical talent. Every single track no matter what album, is unique unto itself. Gotye's distinctiveness manages to express volumes on so many levels all at the same time, like a deft juggler maintaining numerous items up in the air, and seemingly all without effort. The lyrics, too, are usually meaningful in some way, dealing with more than the usual love themes. In fact, the videos paired with the tracks, which can be found somewhere on youtube, offer imagery that is both impressive and noteworthy -- worth checking out as well. Essentially, I always like what I hear from Gotye but I have to admit "Making Mirrors" and "Like Drawing Blood" are still by far my favorite albums.

A sublime collection of songs full of darkness and passion. Quite different from the later albums, but meticulously crafted as always by Wally de Backer.
Great lyrics, amazing variety of moods, sounds and rhythyms ranging from electronic to middle eastern percussion, reggae and smokey jazz. Great vocals by Michaela Alexander and Christine Auriant as well as Wally himself.
The romantic Here In This Place melts my spine, A Touch of Noir would make a great short film and Baby is simply a superb song. Love it.

The debut release from Gotye, Boardface is darker and more experimental than his later albums. He uses guest female vocalists on a number of his tracks, which is refreshing, but for anyone expecting only his vocals, don't be too disappointed. Gotye has the elements that make him unique, but you can tell that his sound still has yet to mature. The hypnotic, layered tracks draw from a number of genres and almost have a movie soundtrack feel to them.

I haven't given it too many listens yet, but I'm sure it will become one of my favorites. If you even remotely like this album, 'Like Drawing Blood' and 'Making Mirrors' are must haves.
