Recently have gotten back into chess, dug up my old Chessmaster 9000 software which I was always fond of, and looked for its successors, thinking there would be many iterations in the Chessmaster series since 9. Was totally surprised to learn that for all intents and purposes (not counting the Grandmaster edition), Chessmaster 10th edition was the end of the line for the series, and that was way back in 2004 (yikes!).
Too bad, because with each new version, the program just kept getting more polished, and useful to average Joe players like myself. I guess I feel a bit guilty too, in that had I, like others, continued to buy the latest versions, Ubisoft may have made enough profit to keep it going (does Ubisoft even exist anymore?)
Anyway, I just got my copy (used) of CM10, and I think it blows the socks off 9. The interface is much cleaner and classier, and most important to me, the supporting training and study materials are better laid out - more approachable to people that want to delve deeper into the game. If you are a fan of Josh Waitzkin, there is a lot more material from him presented in CM10, including his own tutorial on learning the game from scratch.
Aesthetically, you have more chess sets to choose from - the 3D sets haven't aged the best when compared to chess games like Pure Chess or Chess Ultra on the PS4, but again, we are talking about a program that's over 10 years old.
Personally, when I am studying the game, I prefer the 2D sets anyway, and I've always loved the easy on-the-eyes "newspaper" 2D sets in Chessmaster, along with the ability to easily scale them up and down.
I've been able to get CM 9000 to run glitch free on my old Vista, Win7 and Win 8 systems, but oddly, while CM 10th edition installed fine on my Vista and win 7 systems - it seemed to lock up in the same place on CD #1 about 1/4 of the way into the install on my System 8.1 machines - the screen will read "Removing Applications," and I thought the CD drive froze. Finally, I tried again, and just left it alone for a long time, and it got past that screen and installed correctly. Still, from what I gather, it's pretty much a lost cause on Win 10 machines, which is a pity.
Anyway, this is a gem of a program, an totally worth snapping up if you can find it used and in good shape. And you still have some old functioning hardware laying about. Here's hoping that someone resurrects the title, and keeps improving the quality content. I promise I'll buy it. :)
