1986年の「ザ・ウェイ・イット・イズ」でデビューしてから18年。ロック、ジャズ、フォーク、ジャム・バンド、ヴォードヴィルなど、あらゆる音楽の垣根を超えてハートフルなアメリカン・ミュージックをプレイしてきたブルース・ホーンズビーの2004年のアルバム。派手さこそないものの、誠実でソウルフルなピアノ、そして歌声がじんわりと心に染みいってくる。

Bruceらしい曲が揃っていて、楽しめます。シングルヒットはしないだろうけど。
作り手も聞き手も成長・進化していくのだから、昔と同じものはあり得ないでしょう。
東京芝公園付近をこのCDを流しながら自動車で走っていたら、赤い夕日がビルに反射している情景に、Bruceのピアノが思いのほかマッチしていました。
うん、いいんじゃない。

　かつての"Harbor Lights"や"Hot House"のような作品をイメージすると多少がっかりするかもしれません。個人的には、後者にある"Pastures of Plenty"のような緊張感のある曲をぜひとも期待したいところですが、このアルバムはちょっと違う感じです。かといってRange時代のような曲を揃えているわけでもなく、私の中では少し中途半端な印象を持ちました。
しかし、聞き込めば旋律とピアノが非常に美しい"Hooray For Tom"などはRange時代の"The River Runs Low"にも若干似た感じがあったり、良い曲もあるので、その点も加味して星３つ。次作に期待。

One of Bruce's very best.
A carefully crafted commercial effort that features all aspects of the Hornsby canon; excellent song writing, vocals and musicianship. 'Hooray for Tom' even surpasses Randy Newmans ability to compose Americana. This is one of those albums that you listen too all the way through. Repeatedly.

Il cd è arrivato nei tempi indicati, insieme ad altri due dello stesso autore. Purtroppo l'imballo totalmente inadeguato non li ha protetti durante il viaggio. Sono arrivati con i case danneggiati due su tre, uno dei quali (Scenes from the southside) in maniera consistente.

Well Amazon's reviewer says this is "mercilessly tasteful middle-of-the-road rock for mortgage-paying grown-ups", well what's wrong with that!
Bruce Hornsby's latest CD just shines through as the work of a very skilled musician, the kind of thing that only comes with years of experience, no boy band synth here.
Some tracks have a distinct 'Americana' style to them (that sound and atmosphere that brings to mind images of Wild West settlers crossing a prairie:-) ) and there is a certain 'sameness' to a couple of tracks, but Hornsby's magnificent, flowing piano playing lights up every single track.
Hornsby fans will love this new CD, its a great fusion of jazz, pop, and piano, while other music loving grown ups with or without a mortgage should love it too.

Ich habe das Album "vorgehört" und war interessiert an "Gonna be...". Dann kaufte ich sie mir und dachte nach dem ersten Hören: "Also kein "hit" drauf, aber ganz passabel." Mittlerweile aber höre ich fast nur noch diese Scheibe, und sie wird, mal abgesehen von zwei Stücken, die nicht meinen Geschmack treffen, immer besser. Überraschende Arrangements wie bei "Candy Mountain run" oder dem Opener hört man wahrscheinlich fast ausschließlich bei Bruce. So wird das Album wie eine immer tiefer werdende Liebe: Nach dem Kennen lernen wird es immer besser und für immer (sollte es das geben ).
Halcyon days ist nur empfehlenswert und bringen das ,was der Titel verspricht!

I have really enjoyed this cd. It's got some hot piano riffs with interesting lyrics and I very much enjoy Bruce Hornsby's voice. The tracks that I don't always want to hear include "What the Hell Happened?" and "Heir Gordon" but it's not that they are bad songs - just songs that you need to be in the mood for. Like a Mel Brooks movie - sometime he doesn't make me laugh other times I laugh till I hurt.

Anyway - it a wonderful cd tuneful and adventurous don't be afraid to try it.
