Easily the best album of 2004

It took me awhile to get into this album, admittedly. I discovered Fiery Furnaces with this album, went back to the much more accessible "Gallowsbird's Bark" and ate it up, then crept back to this album later in the year. The main obstacle to accessibility for this album is that the golden nuggets are often hidden deep inside the track behind 2 minutes of an electronic introduction that you might not like on first listen.
The most important thing about music is that you enjoy listening to it, not that it is loved or hated by indie-scene rock critics. I enjoy listening to this album more than any other from 2004, so I consider it the best of that year.
The lyrics are fun and clever. The Fiery Furnaces have a way of avoiding the bland generalities that plague alot of songwriting. Instead of saying it's a car, say it's a Honda. Instead of saying it's a beer, say it's an Amstel Light. Lyrics that might have been boring if penned by some generic punk-pop band become a interesting with small touches like that.
Musically, there are alot of ideas. They do a good job of weaving together their musical ideas within each track, returning for a hint of an earlier idea, changing the instrumentation on the next go-round, and so forth. Indie rock's greatest songwriter, Robert Pollard, will cram 20-30 musical ideas onto an album and you're usually lucky if half of them hit the mark (but boy do they ever hit it when they do!) The Fiery Furnaces are far more hit than miss with "Blueberry Boat". Certainly, none of it is tedious, with the possible exception of "Paw Paw Tree".
Ultimately, it is enjoyable on multiple listenings because of its complexity. For comparison, the new Decemberists album "Picaresque" is bound to be a darling of the indie-music scene this year, but it wears thin after only half a dozen listens and will never see the inside of a car stereo by 2006. "Blueberry Boat" will be listened to and enjoyed for quite a long time to come.

There's a fine line between sonic collage and bloated bombast. Zappa's early stuff seemed artful because he built all his Varese tricks on top of social outrage and street metaphysics. The Captain's brilliant eccentricities lay on top of dada and Howling Wolf. Without the wit and depth, you're into Tubular Bells and Topographic Oceans pretty damn fast.
I have to admit that I was totally unaware of the Fiery Furnaces until the recent national reviews, generally on the underwhelming side. Fortunately, the local DC City Paper clued its readers onto the merits of this recording, if only if you listen to it enough times to get used to it.
Beats me, this is awesome right from the get go. The Berger sibs Fried my brain by combining choice sounds with young white city folks country blues, broken into a jangle of nuggets. A very wholesome hallucination. And very much a breath a fresh air during this popular music drought.
ps. Very different from their first album, which is also quite admirable.

The Fiery Furnaces' best album!

Blueberry Boat is probably the most ambitious album by experimental/indie band The Fiery Furnaces. Uses a wide variety of styles: some great rambling/narrative tracks, particularly "Chief Inspector Blancheflower," "Quay Cur" and the title track, as well as fun little ditties like "My Dog Was Lost and Now He's Found" and "Birdie Brain." If you're wondering what the big deal is about this band, start here.
