INNER URGE was Henderson's fourth date as a leader for Blue Note Records, and the first time he set out to record without his trusted friend, trumpeter Kenny Dorham. This release features "Isotope," now a well-known Henderson tune, and a lively version of the standard "Night and Day." Clearly the record's most memorable track, however, is the explorative "El Barrio," a droning piece that offers listeners a plethora of rich musical textures, modal detours, and percussive explosions.
Product Description
The presence of John Coltrane's pianist and drummer, McCoy Tyner and Elvin Jones respectively, give this quartet album weight and passion. Henderson's playing is incandescent throughout. The first three selections are exciting, probing Henderson originals that soar, but his interpretations of the Duke Pearson ballad "You Know I Care" and Cole Porter's "Night And Day" are equally vivid.
JOE HENDERSON, tenor sax; McCOY TYNER, piano; BOB CRANSHAW, bass; ELVIN JONES, drums

Inner Urge–11:58、Isotope–9:15、El Barrio–7:15、You Know I Care(Duke Pearson) –7:22、
Night and Day(Cole Porter) – 7:24

Two things delayed me acquiring this record. The first was the fact that it shared a lot of the line up with McCoy' Tyner's "The Real McCoy" which is also a superb record but let down by the poor quality recording of Elvin Jones' drums. The other fact was that Joe Henderson's work with trumpeter Kenny Dorham represents the finest tenor / trumpet partnership on Blue Note - Dorham being an unsung hero and probably the most interesting trumpet player on their roster.
"Inner Urge" opens the proceedings and the urgent theme is instantly memorable, Henderson's employment of half-diminished chords and unusual sequence with suspended harmonies renders this tune very contemporary. The following "isotope" is another convoluted Henderson blues theme and the final two tracks, a beautiful ballad by pianist / composer Duke Pearson and the standard "Night and day" round things off. For me, the most fascinating track in the Latin "El Barrio" which opens with split tones from the rasping tenor before launching in to an infectious, medium - tempo groove.
The band is pretty spectacular with McCoy Tyner appearing on this record after his initial manifestation on Joe Henderson's seminal "Page One" - probably the pick of Henderson's Blue Notes. Elvin Jones is more ably captured by the recording process and Bob Cranshaw firmly anchors the band down to round off a stellar quartet. Picking the best Joe Henderson record in this era is next to impossible and I suppose it will ultimately boil down to taste and which of Henderson's theme appeal the most. The groups with Dorham are also recommended for the trumpeter's prowess with the pen yet this quartet date is as good as anything from the mid 1960's and , in my opinion, is superior to the wonderful "Ju Ju" which also paired a leading tenor playing with members of Coltrane's quartet - in this case Wayne Shorter, surely Henderson's only real rival for king of the Blue Note tenors? This is a record that stands up to repeated playing and an absolute classic.
