Nyro sizzled, NYC burned....

After listening carefully to all of Laura Nyro's recorded catalog, I crave this live CD most.
What a night it must have been in 1971 at the Filmore East.
Nyro was best live albeit the sound quality may be less stellar than her well-polished studio-recorded efforts.
She gave of herself musically to her audience both in passion of performance and number of encores like few do.
This CD contains two songs of hers you won't find elsewhere on her recordings which are sovereign: first, the unforgettable "American Dove", from whose chorus this CD's title comes, and "Mother Earth", with its lyrical response to Jackson Browne's love song "Nightingale", said to be written specifically to Nyro.
The piano solo in "Map to the Treasure" alone is well-worth owning this CD with its stunning tempo-crescendo.
Nyro was an artist solely and wrote to compel and release herself and her audience.
Their connection was special.
She wearied in argument with greed-driven record executives pushing for control over her writing volume and her time and number of performance, particularly after becoming a single Mom.
Consequently, her fame peaked and dipped like the rhythm changes in her songs.
She was also someone who America never quite understood.
Of course, if you're lucky enough to have any musical training and have listened to high-brow work like opera, classical, or Coltrane and Miles Davis, coupled with a healthy dose of being poetically well-read, you will have the necessary ear to break down her complex writing.
She wrote the music to best illustrate her poetic lyrics.
But if you don't, just read the lyrics published with almost every CD and listen to her work repeatedly.
The music captures the lyric.
Why was Nyro so special musically?
She was the first to take ordinary pop song structure and turn it upside down.
And she did this at age 19.
She sang in 3 octaves with perfect pitch, doing all her own background 3 or 4 part harmonies on the studio recordings technically perfect.
Her vocal phrasing was varied and unique, learned from among others, jazz greats like Sarah Vaughn and Nina Simone. (Try singing along with the haunting "Spanish Harlem" and see if you can hit it simultaneously....).
She impressed her fellow musical artists. Google their quotes regarding her work and spend some time reading their accolades.
She was an artist's artist.
On this CD, her voice is at its widest range in her career, with the piercing falsetto that was her trademark (and for some, a scourge. Gotta love it, though...).
Because her voice was a bit dehydrated in places on this CD, it gives this performance an occasional rasp towards the end; it is the spent performer's trait so good for emphasis.
Some of her best writing and most sensitive versions she did of great covers of sweet-pop oldies are on this CD.
Her art is a bildungsroman of her expressive, inner life via unique compositions.
What a gal; she's immortal now.
PS If her later work (after 1975) seems less exotic than her infamous first 3, remember her life had taken different twists by about 1975.
It wasn't all grand, either.
But Nyro never gave in to darkness.
Her inspired vision of heaven she gave to leave us with hope:
"Come young braves, come young children/ Come to the book of love with me...There'll be trains of blossoms, there'll be trains of music....
